That is the beginning of what would have become spalting, as in splated maple. That wood was cut a few years early for that process to complete.

Per Gil....the spec finish will be “Lemon with very light red leftover”

The top on this one is 50 year old reclaimed maple.

I don't see anything there that looks like spalting, even early stages. The lines he's asking about is the actual wood grain. That's curly maple, thus the grain isn't straight.

Even unfinished its beautiful. "Many men" have an inherent problem with expensive gear, but if this turns out to be your dream guitar, its worth every penny. I could not be a friend to those kind of men.

Wow, what a great top. Eastern fiddleback maple has such beautiful cross-grain, as opposed to big leaf which is often dead straight even with a big figure.
