Pickup experimentation time !

Whats a good neck position bucker that has an almost single coil type of articulation/sparkle to it ? Don't want to coil tap a humbucker. Should I be looking at a humbucker spaced P90 or single coil ?

Duncan Jazz is ok at this, but not quite there.

You're asking for something thats really not in the nature of a humbucker. When you say the Jazz not quite there, thats about as close as you're going to get in my experience. Dimarzio makes the Humbucker From Hell that's supposed to sound like a single but I've never tried it...may be worth a shot.
I think splitting will be your best bet.

Thanks so far. I should simplify my question by asking "which neck bucker pup on the market has the most stringy definition" ? The opposite of the usual fat, smeary neck bucker tone.

I don't want a literal single coil, unless those humbucker sized P90s or similar are worth looking into.

Humbucker From Hell is much brighter/ clearer than the Jazz. It is pretty cool. Can be tricky to mate with a bridge humbucker though.....another cool neck pickup is the Air Norton. And the Humbucker From Hell with Air Norton is a pretty cool combo

I have an Anderson HO1- in the neck position of a Strat mutt that has a lot of spank and chime to it...and it sounds just like a true single coil when split.

Though I can't speak from experience, I've heard quite of few times that the BK Painkiller neck has a very single coil type thing going as far as pick attack & articulation goes.

+1 as well.

You're asking a humbucker to be non-humbucker with your request. No dis, just saying, it ain't gonna be easy... You clearly stated NO coil tap, unfortunately, this would have been my only advice, and with that advice, as per the post above, I've tapped my Painkillers in my shredder NT-II axe, and it goes from being a brootz inclined guitar to this spanking, chimey, super clear and sparkly guitar with the neck pup split. They REALLY tap nicely the PKs, just sayin'....

P90s are alright - only thing is they get pigeonholed when the gain is on...think Neil Young and Neil Young only. YMMV, but they're too limited in their breadth for me.

PS - I'm loading a triumvirate of BKP Emeralds into my Les Paul '57 Black Beauty. This guitar is a bit dark as is, and I've decided on the Emeralds as they're higher end focused. I can't speak about them yet, as they're not in there yet, but they're NOT getting tapped, just straight up installed, and I'll let you know how they sound when I have 'em in.

try the Seth Lover. chimey and articulate and the neck area will give it more sustain.
