And yet he's still using some pretty good gear...

Weird.

Not true at all and I tell you where I am headed with this.

I agree that a great player can make just about anything work... as shown in this video but the gear will make a difference for sure and there will always be people who can separate tone from technique.

Technique/Playing in that video = Great. Tone......Not so much. I'm sure that it was exactly the lo fi sound he was looking for but Id be willing to bet the tune would reach more people with a better sound.

Take that same composition and playing and have someone else dial in the sounds and the Impact of that tune would be infinitely better.

all in my opinion of course ;)

Well said old chap, I find myself in complete agreement...

Here's another guy shredding some cheap shit....agreed though, good equip would sound much better!

I guess I don't get how the point of the thread is being illustrated here...he is using nice gear if he is actually using the gear behind him shown in the video. I dig the tones as is personally. The tune isn't conventional, why should the tone be?

First off I LOVED the tune, very cool stuff.

I agree with you regarding the operator of very nice gear esp with fx. Put Pat behind the tweaking and I bet we would be hearing a vastly different tone and for the better. Yeah I own an H3000 but I am sure I am not getting the best out of it yet due to the menus and programming.

Probably IMO if one were to start out today playing guitar I would first get the basics down first chops wise and then start learning the art of dialing in tone, you need a solid foundation first imo.

I certainly get your point, but the whole "it's better to be a great player, than have great gear" isn't exactly breaking news

I personally need all the help I can get, so I play what works best for me....I'm assuming the guy in that video is doing the same

A great player is going to play well on pretty much anything; you're way more likely to hear a great performance on the gear they feel most comfortable playing....just saying...gear DOES matter....it's certainly no substitue for talent, but it matters...

I'm a little surprised that a bunch of guitar players even having this conversation...I mean...who isn't more comfortable on their own, familiar rig?

Agree with OP that chops/technique being of utmost importance.

However, I want to reference another posted topic about Nuno and playing with Alter Bridge.

Tonewise: Nuno w/ his rig > Nuno with a Alter Bridge's PRS and whatever amp he was running at that show. That rig is good for rhythm but horrible for leads, IMO.

So, the right gear for the player does have something to do w/ it.

It is interesting that this conversation comes up here, a forum dedicated to gear, so often.

And usually in a defensive manner, as if someone feels slighted by the gear other people have so they feel the need to inform those people that their gear doesn't matter.

The greatest technique in the world still needs to be brought to the ears, and that's why gear is important.

Alot of collectors out there that don't even play.

i'm not discounting the need for good gear or being defensive
but at the end of the day i remember the song and the artist, not what stuff he or she used and I think this is the case with most non musicians-90% of the public just wants a cool tune and could care less about a 4000 dollar boutique amp or a 4000 dollar custom shop guitar with a recognized "cool" brand name attached to it.

obviously this is a gear forum so guys will talk about gear until the cows come home-great!
but for me one step before that is composition/technique/soul ,and that can't be bought, and for me is 10 times more important.

So, the gear behind him (assuming he's using that) and on his board is considered sub-par then? Looked like a pretty sweet set up to me. While it's not boutique so what? He can obviously play the shit out of whatever he has.

Of course......but if you're remembering the song and artist, there's a pretty good chance that the artist was using gear that worked for them...gear selection is going to vary wildly from perrson to person.....doesn't need to be expensive to sound great, it just neeeds to fit the player....

"Cool" is what works for the individual....

Besides, if I have "all the gear in the world" no one gets to play shit but me. So I win. Enjoy your kazoo.
