My Mom, Dad and I went to a car show yesterday at the old Plainwell Paper Factory in my hometown.

The city of Plainwell sold the site to the new owner for $1. The new owner is turning the site and building into a classic car park/garage/service center/storage/museum.

Yesterday was the inaugural grand opening.

There was a swap meet, food trucks, live music and lots of cool cars!!!! The weather was perfect. Sunny and 70.

There was also a “class reunion” for all the people that used to work at the Mill. My Grandmother was one of them to participate in the reunion. They had a huge crowd!!!

Also, a huge deal to me….the old Plainwell High School race/drag cars were there!!!! I drove one of them my senior year. So of course I had to take some selfies with it!!! lol. (1990-2026)

i used to do a lot of shows in the 80s and 90s
haven't been to one in 25 yrs.
just lost interest in telling the same stories to everyone who walks by

then they lock the gates and ya cant leave until its over

then hear the guy who swears he had the same car in 1977 while in college with a 396 and Muncie bending my ear for 20 minutes

It sounds like the guy who comes up to you at a gig and wants to tell you all about his great guitar collection. "Sorry buddy, I'd love to chat but I've only got 15 minutes on this break and I gotta piss, get a beer, and get the number of that girl with the huge tits who keeps winking at me and licking her lips".

My car show days are winding down for the reasons you stated among others. The biggest car show in my area has turned into a shit show. Way too many participants and not enough parking. Local businesses (most of which close at 5pm) won't let us park in their lots anymore even though it's only 4 hours a night 4 times a year.

Myself and many others had to park in residential neighborhoods blocks away from the actual car show. The local residents don't like us parking in front of their homes. "You can't park here, we need that spot for our car."

There are two car shows each summer within minutes of my house. Plenty of parking at each for both classic cars and spectators and they are run very well. Plenty of street vendors, specialty shops, restaurants, bars and games to keep the kids occupied. Yet the turnout sucks.
:dunno:

then you have the judges nit picking the entire car for a local event like it was a concours show

Ohhh your shock absorber bushings are the incorrect texture.
i see your license plates bolts are not correct. uhhhh sir you have a coffee stain on your carpet

i got to the point where i told them all to get lost and dont even look at my car

I gave up on that car show feature years ago. My friends and I don't even register our cars unless a "judge" chases us down. We always leave before the trophies are handed out anyway. I don't need a two bit plastic Walmart trophy.

This sounds like the Minnesota I'm familiar with.

Drag boat races "too noisy". Canceled.

Snowmobile races "too noisy". Canceled.

4th of July waterfront "too much congestion and the geese can't shit all over the hillside in peace". Let's move it to a crappy dirt lot on the other side of town.

Now they race some kind of lame canoes on the lake. Real exciting, smh.

Ironically the Minnesota shows are the "good" ones. The shit show is on the other side of the river in the beautiful state of Noth Dakota.

There was a really good show for a few years on Broadway in downtown Fargo. It got shut down for the reasons you and I mentioned. Then, they relocated it to parking lot at 8 am on Sunday mornings. That lasted one summer because everyone hated it. Most of us don't want to blast our neighbors at 7 am with loud cars on a Sunday morning, then stand in a parking lot sipping coffee with a buncha douche muffins. I'd rather sit on my deck with a cup of Maxwell House while occasionally glancing at my cars in the driveway.

I am fairly certain you are still in a better location than Shitmidji. Anything that was there that was cool they made sure to shut down or ruin. They could've had the International raceway....it went to Brainerd instead and now look how Brainerd has grown since.

I had family in Shitmidji in the late 70s and early 80s. We would meet at Happy Joe's for deep dish pizza then go sledding. I went back in the late 90s to apply for a job. No thanks!

Smart man. I went for a visit in 2009....wife's family has a rural property out there. I brought some guns with to shoot and I got about five shots off before some king shit sheriff's deputy rolled up the driveway to "check it out". Guy was a total jackass over nothing. She's visited a few times since. Nothing good came of it. I have serious doubts I will ever set foot there again.

I guess I’m just getting old, now I want to go sit at car shows and talk to people and look at other cars. I’m turning into an old man!
