I took a bath in shipping last time. I used to pay 200(precovid), now i pay around 450. But I don't flip often, so no big deal. As a buyer or seller, I don't like the zip thing for accurate shipping estimate. As a seller it is just an annoying step to get to the price. As a buyer, I don't mind questions about the amp, but a lot of back and forth about other stuff can be boring especially if I am busy at the time. That's why I like selling on here. Most of us are gear nerds and know how to talk gear, lol.

But as far as shipping. I give an all in one price shipped to your door. If someone wants to ask for a pickup price, that is fine also. But giving an all in one shipped conus is pretty easy.

I'm lazy. I have a minor in mathematics, but don't make me do the math.

How much do you want me to pay -- it's a simple fucking question
So do you prefer both?

Unfortunately its not simple. I want you pay X if you don't want me to pay for shipping or your buyer protection. And I want Y if you do want those.

That's why I thought both was the most transparent and stopped anyone from having to do the math themselves.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I think the most important thing to remember when selling is that you make it easier for the buyer to buy it. You may think that it makes sense to tell the buyer how much you want to clear on it. That is logical. Then if they want insurance, they pay for it, they see how much the shipping costs.
Those two things suck. They are not fun to deal with. I hide those unpleasant things when i sell something. I am going to get insurance when i ship a $4k amp. I don't want the buyer knowing they are paying 250 bucks for insurance. That is depressing. Enough to piss someone off enough not to buy.
Also, when i am shopping for an amp, I don't want to jump through hoops to get a price. I am considering a lot of factors, like competing offers. So i look at the price new, the price of other ads of the same model. If i can get it cheaper somewhere else, or for a few schekels more I get it new, then I do that.
If i had to email 5 people to compare pricing on something, i am walking away from the whole thing.

You need to change the way you’re shipping things; that’s way too expensive. I use shipnerd. I usually have my own box and can weigh/measure the boxes myself. My breakdown for a ~50 lb amp is similar to this:

shit doesn’t move here anymore anyway. Anytime I’ve sold something it’s because I put it on reverb.
Granted I'm not constantly flipping gear, but this seems to be true unfortunately. All this nuanced discussion about how we word our listings is probably irrelevant IMO. If someone really wants a piece of gear and your price is ballpark fair, you're gonna sell the shit even if it takes some back and forth to figure out final price/shipping/fees/etc.

The bigger issue at hand here is - how motivated are buyers these days? I'm just as guilty as the next guy...I peruse the classifieds often and there's so much shit that I desire, even listed at fair prices, but I continue to hold off because financially I'm pretty fucked right now. I've needed a new car since 2021 and it finally shit the bed so I had no choice but to throw down. Then my roof started leaking, medical bills, etc. I think a lot of people are hurting and all this gear just becomes superfluous.

This is definitely true, not just on rigtalk, but everywhere. A lot of people are selling gear they don’t really need, myself included. The demand for it isn’t has high as it once was though.

what the hell did you ship? Your Mills cab? Lol
Just looked at the receipt. It was 346. Still alot. And no, it was for the wizard. I packed the fuxk out of it and it was espensove as fuck.for the insurance

Damn. You need a shipping account. Last Wizard I shipped was to CA with $4400 insurance was $218

The one before that was to OH and was $4700 insurance and that was $187

I double box. Outer box is 36x16x16 and they weigh about 70 pounds

Agreed. I pretty much quit selling online through places like Reverb and eBay ever since the implementation of internet tax and ESPECIALLY since the 1009 reporting started, but recently I've had to go back to it to be able to get anything sold. Many folks on the forums won't do the PPFF thing (which I understand), and if I have to open myself up to 1099 reporting by accepting payment through PP G&S I might as well put my gear up somewhere that it's going to get a lot more exposure than it'll see here.

The last four things I've sold on Reverb (one amp, and three guitars) all sold within a week and for more than I was asking here for it even with no tax, free shipping and offering to receive payment by Paypal G&S (as long as the buyer covered the fees). Everything I sold on Reverb had full shipping and tax added and went fast. I get it that times are hard for everyone and that expendable cash is hard to come by, so it just makes more sense to me list it with Reverb where more people will see it.

Yeah. If i was still in the game, probably would. Think im done flipping. I ship pedals here and there

Other than small items I have always tended to end up with a lot of like pickups, I have never sold a lot other than locally. Unfortunately local has gotten very rough. Nobody has any money, and there aren’t even a ton of good things out there listed locally. I think the guys who are big on selling have just ended up focusing on Reverb.

I have had a guitar for sale locally that is a good deal. Excellent, near mint condition, and I’ve got it listed for at least a couple hundred less than you will find elsewhere- AND with a hardshell case. All I get are “what’s your real best price?”, super lowball offers with sob stories or trade offers for total garbage.

I’ve never sold on Reverb before but I’m starting to look that direction. I think it would make zero sense for me to open a shipping account. I’m never going to be doing this with any real frequency. The price increases and volatility have made it difficult to add an estimated shipping cost to the total price.

If you decide to go the Reverb route, and don't have a shipping account then I would recommend using the Reverb shipping. The best prices I've seen with them are through UPS, but their base rates are pretty decent and when adding their insurance it's comparable to what I'm paying through my shipping account with a declared value of the same amount. I've also heard that it's much easier to get paid if there is any loss or damage vs. trying to get a claim paid from either UPS or FedEx directly.

As a frequent buyer, and then considering them when I sell, I want to post an all-in price, and I usually just roll my shipping guesstimate in and eat the fees. Maybe I’m not picky enough but if shipping to someone further away cost me an extra $10 than I expected I’m not too bothered about it.

That said, I always say non-48 US shipping I’ll have to get a quote for, and I pack and box my own stuff. Taking something to your local UPS store you may as well double or triple the price while they gouge you on packing materials and price. It’s actually been like this forever but it’s more noticeable now that the base cost of shipping has gone up a lot. Plus if you box and ship yourself, there is ALWAYS a UPS coupon for a discount anywhere from 10-20% sometimes more.

There is something to be said for using Reverb, which has a much better corporate rate than we will ever get as individuals, to the point where shipping on less expensive but large/heavy items, you’ll actually save more shipping through reverb and paying their 5% fee than if you ship it yourself. Ex if you’re selling a 100w Peavey head for $400, just add 5% and sell it on reverb instead and you’ll come out net better than if you sold it privately, unless you only have to ship it one or two states over.

I always post the PP/shipped price because that's how I've sold the most items. If someone wants to negotiate based on location or alternate payment method, it's a simple enough conversation to have.

For most stuff I like an all-in-1 price, whether buying or selling.
If it's a crazy big or heavy item like a 100 tube head or 212 cab then I'd list it all together at an average shipping cost and specify that there could be some adjustment done through PM.
