Classified seller etiquette

I have been on this forum for quite a while and have bought and sold many things over the years and I have really noticed a real lack of etiquette in the classified section... mainly with the total lack of consideration for replying to a PM that a seller receives on their item.

For example...if a person posts an item for sale or trade and is contacted regarding a trade and reads the PM and is not interested... a SIMPLE reply stating "Hey, no thanks I am really not interested in that." is simple, considerate , and unless you are keyboard challenged... should take you less that a cool minute to respond, however it seems many would rather be inconsiderate and not even bother responding if they are not interested...

Well guess what... you are only shooting yourself in the foot, because I know from personal experience that more often than not if I get a reply telling me "Thanks , but not interested in that." usually I will say, "okay cool" and just buy the item that you are selling instead. My conclusion is ... since you are so inconsiderate or just dense that you cannot take a minute to reply you have lost a potential chance to sell your item to me as well as I believe others who might also be interested in your listing.

The principle goes a long damn way!!!

Yeah, I know there are a bunch of damn tire kickers who will waste you time, ask a million fucking questions, and drive you to the brink of madness to the point where you feel you need a few strong drinks (yes, I have been there)..  but those who have dealt with me over the years know I don't have time for that bullshit and most of the time if inquiring about your item it's because I am interested in it and have the means and intention of getting the item.

So just a thought that maybe some of you might want to consider if in fact you want to sell things in the classified.

End of rant

Your response speaks volumes... Thanks so much for that intellectual response... I just hope it doesn't go over my head :D

Yeah I would think it would be common to reply yah or nay.
Ignoring some request (Unless its completely ridiculous....like a guy says no trades and someone offers a trade...or if asking $1000 obo and someone offers $200)  ...is pretty silly but each their own.
I havent bought or sold in a long time but when I did I always replied to everything. Just to touch base. Ya never know a deal might be made with that guy at a later date.

Sadly, the lack of common courtesy is a problem in many areas of society...

This. The only time I don't bother to respond is if I've either posted no trades and the PM starts off "I know you said no trades but" (and even then I send em a no thanks) or if someone is just trying to lowball the crap out of me.

Everything else warrants a response and a lot of the time it's just a guy wanting to converse before sending money. It's a fuckin buyer's market and has been for over a year, it's not worth alienating anyone you might deal with later on down the road. Also, if I sell an item that someone was interested in, I'll kick em to where another one is just to be polite about it if at all possible.

No shame in manners.

Yes, it is irritating when sellers don't respond.

I've gotten the exact same thing and couldn't agree more. It's probably a hint of how the deal would have gone down too.

It's super annoying when you PM somebody trying to work a deal and they take forever to respond even though they log on a bunch of times. They obviously see it and most likely get an email telling them that they have a PM. I always respond promptly and appreciate when someone else does the same.

Agreed. It really is just a matter of being polite and you never know, maybe they have something to trade that you never thought of...no need to get all butthurt over a perceived insult. We're all just gear nuts anyway right?

Some people don't want to deal with others for one reason or another. A lot of people know who the serious sellers and buyers are, and who are kicking tires. Too many people surf the classifieds and yet don't have the money to buy, yet want to shit on someone's classified. The rules of engagement are pretty clear on that and should be enforced.

I could not agree more.

And then there are the folks that don't bother to respond to anything after their crap sells. They seemingly just abandon ship and don't bother to update the ad, because they have succeeded in getting what they want from their posting. Seems like simple etiquette and common sense, but I guess they just don't care.

I couldnt agree more. It happens more times than not. The lack of manners really puts me off.

If a buyer ask me a question about my item, I always respond. The least they can do is say "no thanks" or "I will pass". something along those lines.
I had one buyer on another forum ask me for a shit ton of pics. After I took the time to take all the pics (24), load them on my Mac and then email, I got no response. No acknowledgement of my time. Nothing.

Like another poster stated, lack of common courtesy is wide spread every where. I often hold doors open and dont even get a thank you from some of those low class shit heads. When that happens, I call them out in public.

This is way too common among sellers and buyers these days. I'm selling an amp now and have had four guys this weekend PM me saying they were interested, asked simple questions (head dimensions, location since I don't have that listed on some forums, etc) which I replied to... and no response at all. One guy made an offer and I told him that what he offered is what I was looking to clear, could he kick in a little bit more to cover shipping. No response. Funny thing is I'm actually going to sell the amp to a guy that offered less that wasn't an asshole and talked to my by PM.

I buy and sell a decent amount of gear, and I'm at the point of keeping a list of user names of people that do this crap and telling them to fuck off if they PM me about something as it has really gotten ridiculous.

If somebody contacts you, it's common courtesy to respond even if the response is, "Thanks for the offer but I'm not interested."

Same here. I usually give them a nice, loud "Your welcome!"

I will only deal with reputable guys on the forums for these reasons the op brought up. Usually these rude assholes are the ones you see bumping the shit out of their for sale threads and bitching how nothing is selling.

Good point and your most likely right as it would be more of a headache to deal with these kind of people

 I also remember the ones who do this shit and guess who won't be buying there stuff anytime in the future... even if it's something I was interested in as I'd rather find it somewhere else than deal with them because as I said the principle of the matter goes a long way... Amazing how these knuckleheads still don't get it

Yup. Dealing with this as this thread develops.

-guy has fs/ft + cash
-PM "hey you like this guitar?" (Thursday am)
-response from seller "yeah! if you add the cash too" (late night Thursday)
-I respond with "sure my guitar plus $XXXX?" (First thing Friday am)
-radio silence since...

:(
