Probably a question for TGP but what the hell...I've recently fallen in love with single channel amps (2203, Skeleton Key, Diezel BigMax) and starting to explore running a two amp rig with a switcher.

I can get nice cleans out of the above by rolling off the guitar volume (and I love playing that way), but really want to add a dedicated head...dead clean to edge of breakup tones for ambient work mostly.

Any recs? Need a loop and, preferably, a master volume. Not looking for a combo.

Mentioning Boogie, I owned the Cali Tweed and thought that had the most wonderful clean tone I have ever heard. Full and warm. Great edge of breakup. Master volume and loop. Both work great.
Also can get it in a better color than fawn and decent used pricing.

Shame I went with the combo, I probably would have kept the head...

Friedman?

i always thought these sounded good for that on the edge of break up thing and it has a mv and a loop

Was gonna say Twin Reverb but since you want a head, Dual Showman.

Dude, a Twin for break up tones too? Do you know how loud it would have to be? o_O
I owned a '73 SF Twin Reverb for a while, because I dig surf guitar tones too, but lo and behold, the Twin wasn't cutting it for me. Too clean.
After getting rid of it and getting a '74 SF Princeton Reverb, much happier for that.

That being said, didn't Peavey had this Classic something...I remember that one had great cleans and even a pretty good classic rock-y drive channel.
Otherwise, I'd look at Mesa or Laney.

Shit, forgot I even started this thread - thanks all for the recs, much appreciated.

He said clean to edge of breakup and I was maybe wrongly assuming he was playing heavier, louder music.
Lately it's mostly been the 2203 with a King in Yellow or SD1 (or both) up front. Pedals off for crunch and them combinations of the boosts for thrash to modern heavy tones. I really never cared much about cleans/lighter driven tones but starting to play more in that realm. Maybe I'm getting old.

Definitely interested in a Fender but just rarely see them in heads and I don't want to lug around a combo in a two amp rig.

I have a Deliverance 60 out for delivery so I may just scrap the whole thing if that beast measures up to the nearly universal praise I hear about it.

The dual showman is a Twin Reverb in a head format, no combo but yes they are less common. They also aren't wanted by many because of the output and heft but that means you might be able to find a good deal. I think the ohms output might be different than a Twin but the circuit is the same. A 45 watt Blackface Bassman might also be something to take a look at but if you are running really loud it might not keep up the way the showman would. Hoping for the best outcome for your tone search regardless. Good luck.

I think jonny winter and Rick derringer ran a pyramid stack of 6 twin reverbs each…. I couldn’t imagine. Uncle Ted used showman’s right?
