haven’t heard in person but the clips are sounding promising and pretty real!
i’ve always wanted a rack box that could realistically reproduce the holy grail grail delays and their associated preamp and analog signal path architectures with 100 percent accuracy. imagine a company that put in the work to truly reproduce the 2290, pcm42, sde/sdd, and maestro/roland signal processing paths beyond just the general nature of the delays and repeats.
companies do a great job at emulating the sounds of a 2290, roland/maestro tape delay, analog delay, etc and the modulations, but the colors and transparent interaction with other gear and touch sensitivity depth you get with the original units is generally not the same, thus irritating!
it’s why ej runs an echoplex just for the preamp into a belle epoch delay. i totally get that. i had a crazy rig with the belle epoch deluxe in the loop of a j rocket APE preamp, with a rivera/GCS buffer in front and a chase secret pre behind it to provide just the right amount of preamp buffer hitting the delay, a mixer and more fine tuned input drive with the APE, and a reamp/eq on the back end to really present the effect in all its glory.
as close as it was, and it was close…it still didn’t compare to the magic of my old roland space echo.

Thought I would post that here, made me think of that cool thread & related tone discussions when I listened to this one yesterday night:
One of the many good examples why Gary is one of the greatest to me.
Same as with Michael Schenker we recently discussed for instance, he's one of the first examples that come to my mind when I want to illustrate the phrase "talent & style always beat fancy gear".

always nice to see folks appreciating vintage rack rig tones in this era! RJ does a great job breaking it down here and his core tone sounds great.

That Vintage FX book and their website is a tremendous resource. I'm still digesting everything in it and I'm sure I'll keep referring to it for years. Well written, tons of info, and I really love all the pictures of the internals. The sound clips on their website are well recorded and really help to understand what each of these units did, why they were an integral part of producing the sounds they did, and how they've evolved into what we have available today.
If anyone is even relatively interested in these magic boxes or how these sounds were created, I simply can't recommend this book enough. To me, it's a fundamental part of being able to take what I have and create something new, whether it's listening to Robert Johnson or Maybelle Carter, learning how tubes work, or growing my understanding of these incredible machines.
Take, for instance, the TSC clip above. It takes what is a beautifully pristine guitar sound and turns it into something that transcends tone and becomes the expression of emotion through sound. Think about a great Lexicon reverb, or the original Eventide DSP4000 Black Hole, how just turning them on, even with the default settings, can transport the sound to the deepest parts of the imagination.

my friend had 2 of his 3 jems up for sale including this one
mahogany body great shreddy neck and tone specific neck/bridge with lindy fralin single coil middle. the pickups really transformed that thing.

after we gave it what was supposed to be a final play through bon voyage, it sounded so good both clean and dirty and played so effortlessly, he decided to keep it
we played it through the friedman steve stevens v1.
i swear it’s the only jem i’ve ever felt was worth playing more than 5 minutes.
