Mate I've read so many of your posts about the VH4 and I find myself agreeing with everything you've said.

In the context of the clips you posted, yeah the Mesa is better.
But damn, the womp on that VH4 is crushing.
If I had tracked those 2 clips, I would have immediately turned up the presence and / or treble a touch on the VH4 and laid it down again.
YMMV

^ Nice suggestion, i'll give that a go.

The presence and treble on the VH4 here are both at 3pm. The amp is very dark.
It doesn't have much high end left before those dials are maxed.

It does have a big low end though doesn't it.

Appreciate the feedback!!

Here we go.
Here's another take with the treb and pres both pushed out to 4pm.
Definitely sounds more alive compared to the original.

Heh heh, that was fast

Sounds good man

Yeah the VH4 is a dark amp. I moved the NFB connection on my amp one tap down to get a little less NFB and a little more edge.
I cant remember if it was on the 16ohm and I moved it to the 8ohm, or if it was on the 8ohm and i moved to the 4 ohm, but it made a big difference.

Anyway, very cool track, and all the clips sound good. It's all varying degrees of awesome

I'm sitting in my little studio here and have all the reamping gear etc. still connected so just had to turn it on and do another pass.

I ended up removing a resistor as per Peter's instruction to try and open this one up a bit more. Does make a difference versus stock.

Sounds like the tweak you've done is next level though! wow.

Thank you for the kind words too!

That is a big part of the problem. The VH4 is very dark, smooth, and very compressed. Completely agree. The Mesa is a bit brighter and more raw/aggressive sounding.

Not really. All I did is move a wire from one output jack to another. Takes about 30 seconds, and is easily reversible if you don't like it.
But yes it did make a nice difference.
I'm really digging what you're doing with the ambient soundscape underneath the heavy guitars.
Nice work

The little mod by taking out the resistor has helped me tolerate the compression.

Took me ages to work out how high you need to run the presence and treble.
You really notice how dark it is once you start A/Bing with other amps.

I kept cranking the treb/pres and then dialing them back because I just felt like I was doing something wrong running them that high.
I know we're supposed to dial with our ear but I've never done that on any other amp and it didn't feel right for some reason.

People say Mesas are hard to tweak, the VH4 has been the hardest amp for me to deal with.

I do like that 2nd VH4 edited clip I posted much more, seems to have some bite to it now.

Nice one, do you have any docs or info on how to do this, sounds interesting!
Especially if it's quick and easy to do.

Glad you like the tune!
Here's a clip of the soundscapes dialed up... There's some wah and I think flanger from the pedalboard. Delays are from the eclipse.
After the torpedo live the signal splits, 1 is the dry signal going to the mixer, the other goes to the eventide eclipse.
The wet only from the eventide is then sent stereo back into the mixer to be blended with the dry signal.

Agree 100% on all points. You think the presence should be set lower... but when you set it with your ears, you know it should be higher. Especially compared side to side with other amps.

I think I would play my old VH4 with the Treble and presence maxed/near max. Same for the Herbert

I have a recto bias, but I think the VH4 has a bit more life and fits the track better here, even on the darker take.

Recto STILL wins for me on that one. Huh.

What reversion is that Recto?

Mesa clip sounds great!

I do like the second VH4 clip too. But the Mesa edges it out a bit. Where do you have the mids set on the VH4? If they aren't maxed out, try that... would love to hear another clip what that one change. That's how I had to run my VH4 when I had it years ago.

I really like both of those amps. They are both an amp I would love to own.
Nicely done!
