I liked the low gain clip more than your twin+pedals.............. that crate sounds DAMN good, congrats

Sounds good! Is it me or is your guitar very thick sounding? I noticed that on the some of the most recent clips that you have been posting.

My guitar is DEFINITELY very thick sounding. That Rio Grande BBQ humbucker is a super thick pickup. I have also noticed that the recordings sound thicker than the amp in the room, so I'm guessing some of it may be from the crappy digital camera "video mode" too or something. I dunno.

I like the BBQ being thick, though, because it allows me to dial in more treble or less bass on the amp. I'm digging that.

That's great to hear since I though my ears were starting to go lol
I hear you about being able to dial in more treble and les bass. My GMW's are actually the exact opposite. I have to dial in more bass and less treble since they are bright sounding guitars!!
The Crates get a bad rep and sometimes it is warranted but they definitely have some great sounding pieces of gear!! Anton showed me some killer sounding Crate stuff a few years ago at NAMM and I was pleasantly surprised!!

Damn that sounds good! EL84's have such a unique tone to them. That mid gain setting probably SLAYS with a boost in front of it. That is a KILLER rig.

Over the past few years, I've been trying to get a tone with smoother highs. Not muffled, but smoother highs and thicker lows. It took me years to figure out it was the Duncans I've been using. When I first put this BBQ in, I thought it was too muffled. But that allowed me to up the treble on the amps and I really dig it that way now. I'm positive that wouldn't work for everyone, though.

I personally think this amp sounds really good. Not perfect or better than everything else, but good. And since I got the entire rig locally for $325, I'm VERY pleased. It sounds really Marshally, but a little more aggressive. Either way, a cool little rig like this for this price is awesome. If I hit rock bottom and could only spend $500 or so on an amp rig, I think this would be the one.

I think the rig sounds great and paying $325 doesn't suck!! That's just rediculous!!
duncans do have a lot of highs to them. The only duncan that I know off where the highs seem to be dampened a bit is the duncan custom and even that sounds bright in some guitars. I think the reason why I like the boogies so much is because of the built in graphic EQ's.

They sound great, especially for $325!!! Most EL-84 amps don't usually have a ton of lows. That sounds really thick

Sounds pretty good to me, but overall seems to be a bit on the muddy side. Just something no quite there, not sure what it is.....

The clips sound great, but you're going to have to turn in your Corksniffer Card. The Diezel and VHT folks aren't going to be happy with you

Yeah, I thought about that... I hope they don't beat me up! Oh wait, I'm tougher than they are, bring it on! :)

I have a feeling you'll revisit the upscale brands again at some point Chris, from observing your cyclical nature

Sounds big and thick! I would love to rty out some of those Rio Grandes some day.

Great clips!

+1 one on the BBQ. I had that pickup in a Les Paul copy and it was thicker than Renée Zellweger in Bridget Jones Diary.

I'm almost wondering if the sky is going to open up and we'll be invaded by aliens from an alternate universe. I mean, isn't it a cosmic law that a Crate shouldn't sound good???

Sounds good man! I liked the medium gain clip a lot, very articulate with good sustain.

I have the 15 watt single channel combo that works great as a cheap tube practice amp. Best 200.00 I ever spent - it's a decent amp and the price was right.
