Just broke in a new Avatar Vintage 4x12 with Creamback 75s. So I have an Avatar with V30s, GBs and now CB75s. Put a 57/421 in front of all 3 and ran them through 2 neve 1073 press, no eq or FXs into my Cameron Ocean with my black Paul in drop C#. Whatcha think???

Wow - nicely done.

I'd have to say for balanced sound, the 75 takes the cake.

I found the greenback to sound very "standard", which isn't a bad thing - just overall "standard".

The V30 was brash. But we have come to expect this about the V30s.

In a mix the 30s will always win. But if I wanted to have my guitar sound good "as a guitar" I'd go with the Cream 75 here.

I'm hoping the incoming 212 I have with a Cream 65 and Cream 75 will offer a nice collective complement.

Nicely put together James

Creambacks sounded the best to me. Toss up between V30 and Greenbacks. V30 was tighter and more forward. Greenbacks were looser, rounder, but more pleasant. Creambacks were sort of a combo of the two.

I prefer the greenbacks...
creambacks don't seem to crunch so much...I had the same problem with my Heritage G12M's..
They sounded great at low volumes but when it came to high volumes the sound was totally flat...no balls nothing...
I feel like the creamback has a lot in common with the heritage GB...
So GREENBACK RI for me!!!!

It was a cool test. I think the v30s record great and leave that little dip in the mids for the singer to live. The Creambacks are really thick and chewy. Real nice I think great for really heavy rhythms. Honestly I think the greenbacks kind of suck. They feel terrible to to play. Just so bla and anemic. I listen through the clips and I sometimes can dig the GBs but all in all they bore me.

I agree.

I never seem to be a big fan of V30s for "in the room" tone, but they mic up and record better than most in my experience. I love greenbacks in the room as they are a bit warmer sounding than V30s, but here they sounded somewhat underwhelming when recorded. I actually combine these speakers in one of my 4x12s...it's like the were made to compliment each other. I wasn't too impressed with the CBs...sounded kind of thin to me compared to the other two.

Cool test, thanks

Anyone have a comparison of Creambacks and Splawn Small Blocks (Eminence Greenies)?

Not sure which I prefer between the Creambacks and the V30 but both sound really good to me.

Couldn't agree more. I had a pair of Heritage GB's and 6 Creambacks not too long ago. Neither had the mids at loud volumes to give a crunchy "edge". They just flattened out and got compressed really fast. I use 50 watt amps and I don't have that problem with the GB Reissues.

so do I !!!!!
I might change them with some scumback BM75's...
But that's the only option...
Chinese GB sound amazing...

Great clips! I keep wanting to like something better than V30s, but it always seems to win...to my ears.
Thanks for the comparison!

Hmmm. I think I want to give some CB's a shot. I would need to sell a couple Scummy M75LHDC's first though.

V30, creamback and greenback for me. The V30 records so well.
I really like the creamback but it also sounds similar to the V30 (the mids are different but could be equed so they would sound similar)
The GB are darker, more even (frequency spread wise) and dull compared to the other two.

James, that was a great test, thanks for doing that!

I hope it's not a secret, but, what mic placement do you usually go for? sounds really full, not harsh, just like the guitar should be.

Here are some clips I did today with my American Standard Strat with Fat 50 pickups. I ran through a Fender Princeton Reverb, Fender Super Reverb and Vox AC30. I went through all the pickups on the guitar. Princetone was pretty clean the other 2 had a little dirt on them. Didn't really dial in any sounds just plugged in and played.

I like the Creambacks a lot, much more than the Greenbacks. I can hear why V30s are everywhere for heavier stuff, they have a really nice grind to them

Are the EQ settings the same in every speaker rec session or do you change them in order to get the best sound out of every one? ?
