Coated vs Uncoated Strings

Long time nano web user. They feel better than anything else I tried but they do sound a bit dull and smooth. Maybe I should try Optiwebs, I recently tried Daddario XS which sound good but feel stiff in comparison.

Ive been using elixirs now for 20+ years. First nanos, then optis. I go 4 to 6 months a set

before that it was eb and d'addario. I got a week, maybe 2 per set.

my take is that regular strings sound better than elixirs when first installed. They rapidly die from there on.
Elixirs sound 90% as good at the start and stay there longer, and never get as bad/dull as regular strings can.

The optis do not shed, and feel like new regular strings.

Even with hand washing and wiping down the guitar, I used to need string changes every 2-3 gigs. I've tried a bunch of coated strings, and they're def not all created equally.

I really like the Elixir Optiwebs. Their early polywebs were like a thick plastic coating over the strings. Nanowebs were way better, and what got me to start using coated strings full time. The Optiwebs are the closest to uncoated strings I've tried. Everything rings out bright and crisp. I'd wager that a 15' cable affects tone more than the coating on these strings. The times I've had traditional strings on one of my guitars, I've never noticed a need to adjust my settings to compensate.

I've used Elixir Nanowebs many times over the years - they definitely work as advertised for me (naturally sweaty bastard and insane Lousiana humidity at all times always kept me searching for ways to avoid rust)


Not all coated strings are created equal though for sure. Those DR color coated strings for example are fucking horrible and the coating begins flaking off all over your guitar within minutes (they also feel rough)


As far as non coated strings go, EB Paradigm are by far the longest lasting for me. I kept the same set of Paradigms on my main guitar for over a year before they finally started to deteriorate a bit

Već neko vrijeme koristim Elixire, uglavnom Optiwebs, ali sam probao i Nanos. Prebrzo sam potrošio Slinkies i ostale obične žice. Kupio sam ih na veliko i cijena je prilično niska kada usporedite broj žica s time koliko dugo eliksir traje. Prednost je manje mijenjanja žica.

Primijetio sam da su normalne žice u ekstra laganim kalibrima (7 i 8) trajale JAKO dugo... što je donekle sretan kompromis. Koristim Extra Slinky 8 i Rev Willie 7 i jako sam zadovoljan s objema.

Did you translate what I wrote? (I hope! haha) I have nickle frets and have worn through them with normal strings before I started using elixirs. The biggest thing that helped not to damage nickel frets was lowering string tension by using lighter-gauge strings. I had a fret level then went to 7s and 8s and no damage since.

Optiweb is the brightest, then Nano, then Poly. No damage on any of my guitars. I would try a set of opti and nano and choose the one you like most. They last about the same (in terms of holding a tune and getting dull) and they should be just fine

I, on a whim decided to try the DR neon coated strings. I took them off just as fast as out them on. They sounded dead brand new.

Not sure if these are the "coated" type that are being referred to here but anywho i hated them

DR color coat is like stringing your gtr with birthday candles.
but the traditional DRs are cool.
i played elixer nano 10s for a decade. longest lasting strings but they go sneaky dead.

Sorry for the delay.

I use them with both stainless and regular frets.

Since I havent used any other strings for long enough to compare, I couldnt really comment on wear.

I can say that I have guitar that are 20 to 25 years old that have used elixirs with no appreciable fret wear.

Not popular and I don’t give a hoot….I have been using DR Black Beauties 11/50 for standard tuning forever.

I hate the “brightness” period of new strings and I used to break strings, particularly the low E A LOT. Because I play like a gorilla.

These sound settled in immediately after stretching, stay there for a long time and I rarely break strings.

I’ve tried others several times over the years, but these just work for me. I don’t care about the color, just the performance.
