Hey,

I know they don't get a whole lot of love on here, but I've been thinking about getting one here in the future for smaller gigs and the like, and was wondering what peoples thoughts/recommendation were on them, and likes dislikes, features I may not be thinking of they may not have that I need and that kind of stuff?

I'm looking into some kind of channel switcher with a decent amount of gain that's pretty versatile, killer cleans, solo boost, reverbs that kind of stuff?

So whats everyones take on these things?

for live playing, I have never been happy with anything smaller then a 2x12 (or possibly 2x10) combo. I don't like using a 1x12 live as for me at least, I really miss that extra oomph and depth that another speaker seems to add. I find me thinking my tone is lacking and probably over compensate by adding too much low end or unnessary eq to fill the sound with a single speaker combo. Now thats just me. Good idea to make sure there is no rattling as well, I find combo's more succesptable to rattle.

I don't know if you are looking for new specifically, but I had a Tremo O Verb combo that fit that bill. Tremolo, reverb, two channels, each with two modes, plus the choice of SS or tube rectifiers. (I can't remember if it had a boost...) Goes from clean to dirty to 'modern' (90's modern, at any rate) and sounded really good. They are pretty heavy, though. Somewhere around 110 pounds, IIRC.

And if you like or would consider modelers, the Vetta II combo covers a lot of ground, with a whole host of effects and two-amps-at-a-time. I've been able to get some nice sounds out of it. I don't play it as much as I do my main tube amp 1/2 stack, but it's nice for portability and versatility.

I know theres not a lot of love for the Mark V but the 1x12 combo is super versatile...

I have been using a carr hammerhead 1x12 combo for over 5 years, awesome amp

Einstein combo

Don't you feel it's a bit limited though only having the 1 ch option with the 3 way toggle and then just the lead?

I heard this amp when I went a saw Troy play and it sounds GREAT!!!!!! With the pedals he had runing with it he covered a lot of ground tone wise.

I've got a nice 2x10 combo that I used for a country/blues band. Sweet amp, but combo's are heavy as hell!

Not Really, You can do the mod on channel 1 and get around the volume issues with the 2nd master for the most part, if you don't want to do the mod you can use the 2nd master as a lead boost, and just live with a clean and dirty sound only, it depends what you really want. The combo has reverb, it has 2 loops as you know, not switchable though. I have been using my Einy head instead of my VH4 at gigs for a few months now and I think it works great! I don't even have the mod done yet, I am just going with 2 channels.

There's not really a sound I haven't been able to get out of my Mark V combo, and if you plug it into an extension cab... BOO-YA!!

Cheers,

I personally don't see why someone wouldn't have a combo for the road....

I've played some toilets and have yet to go somewhere where they don't mic you anyway (along with telling u turn down cuz your overdriving the mic, lol). I've always been the type that thinks no matter how well your dialed in, it gets muddled away when the sound guy takes control, and I move around enough on stage to where I don't get to sit in front of my amp very long.

Having said that, unless you have roadies and shit, in my mind it would be a hell of lot more convenient to have a 1x12 combo and maybe a nice ported 1x12 cab to just tote instead of a whole half stack, and if ya have a van, maybe carry a 4x12 and the combo (so if the sound is lackin due to the environment, you could just plug into the 4x12, and maybe even put the combo on the other side so you can get some stereo happenin :rawk: )

Maybe it's just cause I hate unloading and loading all my own shit soo much  , I too am looking at getting a combo for the portability factor...

Dude, it's not super high end or booteek, but the Egnater Renegade 212 is killer!

Also, Boogie Electra-Dyne or Mark combo.

My Trem-O-Verb combo is my #1 all time favorite amp. Easy to quickly dial in SO many great sounds! The only downside is how heavy it is.....but I agree with what was said earlier here about 2x12s sounding so much bigger than a 1x12 in a band situation...so that's always going to make things bigger & heavier.
