I thought it was more than 30W when variac'd down. I remember Eddie saying that but I think it was Pete Thorn that said the Suhr SL68 is closer to 50W when run in variac mode.

Mods can look deceiving. The Cameron goop looks horrible but the amps deliver. And IIRC, Dumble used wall panel or formica or something for the boards for some of his builds. But this mod still looks like shit. That price is for an almost perfect, stock '76 50W.

Whoever came up with equating wattage with SPL set so many players on a fucked up path.

In the 70s, every stinking guitarist I knew (myself included) thought that a 50 watt Marshall
was ~1/2 as loud as a 100 watt one.

I wonder if Eddie maybe just tossed that number out in passing?

EVH tossed a lot regarding his tone in passing.
Loved his playing and his influence on me over the years, his music brought thousands and thousands of hours of pleasure,
But, regarding his gear, he wasn’t always honest…

Yeah because he had thousands of nerds constantly asking him the same questions lol. I have said it before, there is studio stuff I did 15 years ago that I literally do not remember exactly what was used...much less guys 40 years ago that have made 12 albums and everything else.I think sometimes people just forget (especially guys like Eddie who had access to literally everything). I have found that the interviews with producers and engineers that came out years later contain more interesting and accurate info.

Billy Gibbons is famously the same way. He knows most of the magic is in his hands and ears
but he loves tossing unicorns to the rabid fans.

No, Donnie!!?
Let’s not get started on the whole ‘tone’s in the fingers’ thing.
Rigtalk, gearpage and maybe even reverb will fold if too many people come to understand this great revelation of wisdom.
:jerkit:

Try plugging your fingers into an amp w/a 1/4 inch cable and see what that sounds like.

One of my all time favorite players right now is Al Estrada. You listen to his clips demoing VH style gear, and he just OOZES the Ed vibe, swing, feel and phrasing. Your ears are ‘hearing’ early VH, but if you focus on the tone, it may - or may not - emulate what the early VH albums actually sounded like. Your ears are hearing the phrasing, style, swing, and groove. Same with those clips Mark Abrahamian did of his Rockstah Mod5 amps - killer amps, but that EVH vibe on his demo recordings are all phrasing and post production verb. A sh*t tone will alway be a sh*t tone. But get a ‘decent’ (not jaw dropping) tone and let a jaw-dropping player plug in, and your ears will tell you that you NEED to buy whatever amp/gear that guy is playing through.

And you'd be surprised how many pros don't care about tone as much as we do haha.
They care way more about song writing and their playing.

Maybe because they can play so well....they don't fuss over tone as much because it's easy for them to sound great.

Also back then, there really wasn't that much choice either, certainly not like today
