Hey guys, i got a Les Paul custom with EMG 81's and the 18 volt mod. I was wondering if anyone knows if i can just drop my Seymour Duncan Blackout Mick Thomson pickups right in or if maybe i have to get rid of the 18 volt mod and anything else i might need to know. Looks like they might go right in all quick connect and everything.

Thanks,
Paul.

Assuming your EMG's have quick connects, the EMTY's will drop right in. Not sure on the 18v mod but I've read that Blackouts don't need 18v so it probably won't make any difference if you use 1 9v or 2. Longer battery life maybe????

I switched out some EMGs I had for SD Blackouts with quick disconnects. Direct swap out. I wish all pickups had these, would make life a lot easier.

Yeah, they're all quick connects. I'm just wondering about the 18 volt thing mainly...

the 18 volt setup wont hurt anything. there arent any benefits to running 18v's on the blackouts, like there are on emg's, but it wont hurt anything to run them at that voltage.

OK, so the SD EMTY's are in 18 volts and all. Impressed so far. So today (friday) i put the wiring back to (1) 9v battery only. If you have (2) 9 volt batteries you have to have them both plugged in for the pick-ups to work. I was thinking i could remove 1 battery and they would still work, not so!

Anyway, the guitar sounds mildly distorted, even on the cleanest of cleans. Is this normal?

I always ran two 9 volts in parallel with my AHB-3 so it would last a lot longer at 9 volts. I couldn't here any benefits running at 18volts like emg's. I would check your battery voltage.

EMGs can handle up to 27 volts, as they're wired in series, the battery life is just short of double that of a single 9v, the amount of extra power drawn in 18v configuration is minimal, but still a worthwhile mod for whatever reason. -

The emty series blackouts are not designed for clean tones. Regular blackouts clean up beautifully, but the emty's are a totally different animal. I could never get decent cleans out of my setup either with those pickups.
