so i got one of these a while back for my iphone 4

fostex_ar_4i_sides.jpg

and it was great because it took the built in iphone mics out of the equation and also allowed me to select where the low pass filter in the phone was set, and added custom limiting so the audio was better behaved. it also has an attenuation dial with 4 segment LED meter so you can sorta prevent the unit from clipping though there isn't much headroom between too quiet and clipping---

but the mics that come with it aren't the greatest and it is still tricky on where to put it for the best sound in the room---

so because i have a rocktron rack interface

i can run my pedal/rack silently into headphones, so i took the 1/4"stereo headphone output through a TRS stereo 1/4" to 2 mono 1/4" y cable, adapted the 1/4" to mono mini 1/8" male connectors, plugged those in to the fostex AR4i which also has a line level attenuation compensation feature, and a headphone output jack with volume control

and voila!

even though it is hard to get the level perfect i think it sounds way better than the normal iphone clip

Yea man, sounds really good for iphone.

I might pm you someday on this haha.

thanks man-my rig isn't intended totally intended for DI use so the overdrive sounds are a bit too direct for my tastes but the ability to record this way is convenient

once i figured out i could adapt the headphone output of my rig to the fostex it was simple.
the hardest part is actually mounting the iphone/ar4i where i wanted it to sit

i got one of these

http://joby.com/gorillapod/magnetic

as the fostex has a standard camera threaded socket to accept the tripod mounting screw on the joby, but the phone/Ar4i is a little too heavy for the pan/tilt head on the joby model i got so it flops over alot LOL

if you have an iphone or ipod that mates with the fostex, and a rig that has stereo DI line outputs, you just need to adapt your outputs to the fostex inputs

thanks

this clip was rough because my strat has a bad volume pot that is cutting out and the DI nature makes the dirty tones less organic/dynamic than normal

im interested to hear the results with an actual tube amp in the equation!

i didnt want to go too nuts with it until i had more time to experiment my fender and mojave and with levels from my rockcrusher and juice extracter feeding the rack interface
