I dunno guys, I honestly think Jake's stretching and some of his rythm work is mind blowing. (shot in the dark, Bark , Killer of Giants intro etc..) Randy didn't write the riffs Jake did, they seemed more straight forward. Lead wise, bark at the moon or Journey to the Center of the Universe for example, can hang run for run with anything off Blizzard. I can't say either is better as both were great and I judge the merit of the player on what they wrote not just the Batio pinball wizard effect. Jake's use of harmonics is crazy as well. Where Zakk absolutely kills it, is on his pentatonic runs. He did some wicked shit inside that pentatonic box not to mention that crazy vibrato.
Riffs/tunes...hard to get more iconic that Crazy Train, Flying High, Over the Mountain etc... It's cool, we'll just have to disagree. As a young player in that era things were moving fast with the expansion of player knowledge...Zakk with Ozzy was fantastic but then again he had two other players in Ozzy's realm alone to draw from, not to mention dozens of guitarist that were pushing the envelope.
When Randy came out, you really only had EVH. From there it just exploded in short order with Sykes, Akira, Vivian, Adrian, Carlos, Lynch, Warren and then of course Jake and others. Btw/ as I've said Jakes a great player, for awhile he was one of my favorites. I'll say this I loved watching it happen back then. From players to guitars to amps to music to tones...it was all growing constantly.
