I've been playing my Egnater Rebel 20 a LOT lately with an OCD into the front-end, tube mix set on EL84, various wattages, and running into a V30-loaded 4X12. It really is a KICK-ASS sounding rock rig and short of a metal gig, I would be more than fine gigging this setup. Honestly... for all of the $$$ I've spent on boo-teek tube amps over the past couple of years (much more than some here, much less than others), I'd have probably been better-off saving my money and just friggin PLAYING and enjoying what I already had. I'm still getting to know my new Marshall 2203X and still loving my hand-wired, PTP Straub (and also my friend's XTC 101b currently on long-term loan to me). But during moments of clarity, when I'm playing loud and grinning from ear-to-ear while playing my Chinese-made Egnater... I KNOW that great tone comes from many factors and that one need not possess a holy grail amp to produce sounds that make you smile and the hairs on your arm stand up. All this gear-chasing whore-mongering gets to be QUITE the distraction from making music at times...

It's funny you mention this.

I waited nine months for my amp to get back from Dave F and all the while as I waited, I often questioned the need or desire for a hot rodded/boutique amp. Am I as happy as can be with it and does it kill most other amps: yes it does. But, I've been just happy playing a stock JMP with a boost out front. Granted it doesn't sound as good or feel as good but it's still great tone to be had.

If I were to get a second amp, the most appeal thing to me right now is a stock JMP or a Bogner (Uberschall/101B). All three are easily available and have great stock tones on tap.

I like it all...my amps range from Matchless and Trainwreck all the way down to Crate and Boss...there are great tones and a lot of fun to be had playing all of them. Same for guitars...friends used to laugh at me at my gigs for having a reissue Danelectro sitting right next to a Tom Anderson and a Les Paul Custom.

That's great man. Love it!

Proves that you're only interested in different tools for different jobs... and don't give a crap what others think. I've always been kind of that way myself. But I certainly found that when I got caught-up in GAS, part of the reason I was doing it at times was for the brand name appeal and for the "trophy wife" aspect of having expensive gear sitting on stage -- where the gawkers would come-up and drool. It inflated my ego on some level and it's a STUPID, empty shell game with little returns in the way of real satisfaction. REAL contentment comes from putting-out a product of value (music).

I still haven't played an Egnater that I like.

No sweat. The tone must not speak to you. I can deal with that and feel the same way about other brands -- some respected and some not. But make NO mistake... there are GREAT tones inside some Egnater amps if you know how to get them out of there. I've owned flagship amps made by Bogner, VHT, Engl, etc and know what great tone is. And there ARE cheap Chinese PCB amps with great tones in them.

Btw... I get great 80s rock tones out of my Rebel by using my OCD (high Vol, low Gain) to tighten-up the amp's overdrive. I actually prefer doing that with most amps. I'll normally run the gain around noonish and use the OD pedal to add hair and tightness from there.

but what if you could get hand made killer amps at half the BOOTEEK price with no drama? there is a happy medium.

Tru dat Jerry. And I've got nothing against hand-made and/or expensive amps at all. I'm a member of several sites and it seems that on some of them the excited new poster/player with the import amp just sort of gets dismissed by the old-hand corksniffers as if he's just a child who hasn't discovered TRUE tone yet. I've been a member of both camps and I submit that even the cheap, mass-produced amps can produce awesome tone in the right hands. And in fact, have seen many of the members of boards with the biggest collections are in fact some of those most-wanting for good tone and chops. I just wanted any lurkers and guys who can't afford nice gear to know that I've been on both sides of that fence and the view from over there isn't as different as you might believe it to be. I've played in bands with guys who had top notch gear collections, who still sounded like they were running through an early-80s Gorilla. Can't buy a great set of ears and fingers at any price...

I hear you man. I've come to accept that the tones I like to hear don't come from the most expensive amps/guitars in the world; I'm just as happy playing through a $600 6505+ and an LTD ec1000 as I am anything else I've tried. I only play for me and use a shitload of gain cause I dig massive saturation. I sold a Bogner Red pedal 12 minutes after I opened the box as it just didn't speak to me or excite my playing. Don't care, it's much cheaper this way!

I had a Bogner Red for a couple of weeks as well. Sounded great into my clean Straub amp. Like... an XTC!!! LOL! I used to have an XTC Classic and there's a 101b sitting in the man cave right now. A Bogner is a Bogner. Either you dig what they do, or you don't. I do dig their compressed saturation for some lead work. But MUCH prefer the hard-hitting, open roar of a classic boosted Marshall type circuit for rhythm work.

Guys, make sure you take a left ahead, ok?

;) J/K!

I practice at home with a Roland Cube 60 and enjoy playing it very much. When I am playing with a band I usually play a Mark V or Mark III

I have played the Roland Cube 60 at open jams and parties and received compliments on the tone I was getting.

Not all the tone comes from an amp, even when just plugging straight in. :D

can you tell me more about your Straub? that dude helped me out way back , on the hoffman forum I beleive, when I just started building. really cool dude.

You don't hear many GOOD soundclips of it but I dig my Randall Lynchbox mucho. Get a brahma module or stock plexi module and a boost and you are good to go. The effects loop sucks balls but besides that, the amp is very enjoyable! Stock JCM800 with a few tweaks is also la bomba. Everything I dig costs less than 1000$. I'm even liking my bad monkey better than any of the boutiquish overdrives I've tried! It's driving me crazy! Damn thing keeps making it's way back on the board as my number 1 I keep missing out on the local DSL's that are for sale but as soon as i find the right one at my price point, I'm probably going to grab one of those as well.

I agree gear chasing takes away from the playing which is bad.

However I can not do anything short of awesome metal tone.

Jerry I must say I have been stalking you lately and your amps do have me very intruiged.

Never cared what anybody thought. Play whatever I want.

I pretty much sound the same through anything I play anyway, so I chase tone to a point but beyond some quality gear I sound the same. Good tube amp, good Guitar and a good boost and delay and its all the same.

I seriously can not belive the tone is in the fingers hype.

Yea ok if you straight up cant play you might not get a good tone because your notes are not clean.

But when I plug into a Peavey it sounds like a Peavey, when I plug into my VHT, it sounds like a VHT and not a Peavey.

Edit: When I tried a Rockerverb it sounded exactly like a Rockerverb. And that Herbert did not sound like any of them.

Sorry to derail, Mod on Bogner dude!!!
