Cornford Amps ~ Nice

Isn't Govan simply from another planet, maybe even from a different universe all together.

All the very technical licks that he plays on his axe is as if he just invented it during his spare time.

The V100 The Duke 100-watt head is also two channels, with an additional boost function, essentially giving three modes. It uses four 6L6 valves in the power section, a decision arrived at while testing prototypes with Victory's first endorsee, Guthrie Govan: the British guitarist is currently using the V100 on tour. It also has dual-effects loops, a 30-watt power setting and dual, footswitchable master volumes. The SRP is £1,999.

Victory is also making 2 x 12 and 4 x 12 cabinets to match its heads, using Celestion V30 speakers in a pine-and-ply constructed enclosure.

Amps are currently in production according to the company – its website, launching 2 October www.victoryamps.com has more contact and dealer information.

Guitarist magazine will run reviews of the V10 and V50 in issue 374, on sale 18 October.

Designed by noted UK amp man Martin Kidd, there will initially be three all-valve models, all of which will use a "modern-boutique approach to design and specification, using meticulously hand-wired tag boards at the heart of the circuits." The company adds that its aim is "to create amplifiers that inspire you ever onwards in your playing and never let you down."

That guy is just unbelievably good. Tone was alright for me but not amazing.

^ You should be in the room in front of him. That Cornford stuff fits him like a glove.

I wasn't there when he he did this killer Hellcat stuff but I did see Guthrie with his MK a couple of times and it was incredible.

I believe it. Always better in person!

Tell me about it. Guthrie could shred on a ukulele and blow our mind.

I meet Guthrie back in the day when Edward Yoon was the owner and operator of Tone Merchants (great guy Ed was). Ed's now the Manager of guitar setup, sourcing for private label amps/effects/strings at Guitar Center in Chino Cali.

Ed used to occasionally hold small guitar exhibitions from time to time. One of several was Guthrie doing his thing. Guthrie was very cool and very nice. He always took the time to explain how he would create his various unique guitar technique(s).

Cornford are out of business
What?

They are and they aren't...

Cornford haven't made amps for years now. Wally (cornford USA representative) insists the line hasn't ended yet but he also doesn't provide any info on new amps coming out or anything like that.

Well most of all, Martin Kidd, who is the main designer / builder of the amps has left Cornford. So I don't see anything coming out of Cornford anymore.

It's a bummer. I really wanna get multiple Cornfords to add to my MK. They are amazing amps and I think they'll only become rarer and more valuable.

Wally is the guy at Solidbody Guitar in MN, isn't he? That's where I tried a MKii and I wasn't blown away. But to be fair, I was in a different phase musically and looking for more saturation. I remember thinking that amp sounded really clean and honest but it was too polite or just boring in a way. Who knows, I may love it if I tried one now..Also, I didn't get to crank it up and I bet it would come alive the way a SLO does.

Or blame it on the fire, or Paul being ill, or Straight Edge trademarking his own company and selling amps without his knowledge(he says).

Or Gore, whatever.

Cornford tone is sort-of an acquired taste. Seems like most either love it, or they hate it. They have an almost 'tube rectified' feel which doesn't fit my playing style. It's certainly the most unforgiving brand I have ever played. Cornford amps demand a precise technique of which I do not possess. I've been playing these amps for 5 years now, and I'm ready to move-on. By the clips I've heard, the Wizard amps sound spectacular, and may have more of that Marshall feel that I'm looking for.

I was surprised to hear that Mark Cameron said he would play Cornford if he didn't mod amps... To my ears, Cornford tone sounds nothing like a Cameron mod or CCV amplifier.

I thought Richie Kotzen's tones were great from his sig head.

Greg Howe used one too, MK50 maybe?, that gave some impressive tones.

Just the price kept me away.

It's the feel.

Hard to explain, but I see the similarity, for sure.

Potent words. But ya, betcha it's more about "feel" as mentioned above than it is tone.

Doesn't surprise me.

This is relevant, only if I am understanding the term 'feel' correctly. When you say feel, do you mean response? If so, the 'feel' of a Cornford (in my hands at least) is as different from a Marshall as the tone itself. Anyone with experience playing a Cornford MK/RK knows this. I would compare the 'feel' of a say Bogner Shiva to a Marshall, but definitely not a Cornford MK or RK. I would put the Bogner XTC closer to a MC Marshall. Now the Cornford Hellcat sounds (and feels) very Marshall-esque to me. I guess the only way to know is to ask MC himself.
