How similar/dissimilar are these two amps?

I've heard people call the MK50 the "British SLO". The schematics for each are different, for example the Cornford has one less gain stage compared to the SLO's overdrive channel.

To people who have played both what do you think? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each?

I think both sound great and would take either!

Owned both, still own the SLO

Thought the MK50 was a bit too stiff
+ Cornford is out of businnes so the amp's value will slowly go down with time

A friend of mine also descirbed the Cornford as "stiff".

From listening to clips the Cornford seems to be brighter and not as smooth as the SLO, less low end and not as much gain.

I owned both and still have the Cornford 50H MKII. IMHO, the Cornford's clean is much better as is the crunch. The lead channels are debatable. My Cornford has tons if gain and is far from stiff. Finally, I would think that they would actually go up in value as they are no longer being made...and the Victory clips didn't sound much like my Cornford. Just a different perspective :)

 Sounds like you got a good one Todd, pretty much nailed it for me too, except I think the lead tone on mine is is better than the SLO too.
Mine's a Martin Kidd one made by him pre fire/before Straight Edge.

I had the Cornford and liked it. So well designed and every ch + loop is damn good and useable. That being said.. I felt it had a very 'clean' type of gain.. which did make it feel and sound 'stiff' to me..almost a 'cold' type of feeling.. The more you push the master, the more it does saturate a bit but it's still stiff and open compared to some of the other amps Ive had that I liked.... ie.. Modded Marshalls, Friedmans, etc. I still put the MK50II in my top 5 fav amps.

Haven't played a SLO yet... it's on my gear bucket list.

Thanks for the replies.

Seems like a mixed opinion on it.

If anyone wants to lend me one of each and i'll repot back! :D

Here's the Cornford-

Here's the SLO-

Both recorded with a Zoom (which I don't like, at all), but gives a good idea of the differences..

Very cool clips to demonstrate the difference of the lead's thickness.
