I've always maintained that if you wanted to be a more grounded player, you need to think and play outside of your comfort zone.

I know Cory isn't everyone's taste here, but he makes very valid points, especially about the importance of listening and understanding place in a band.

I've played in every kind of band over the years. I use to go to improv jams with jazz dudes, When I was in my 20s. Learning funk rhythm and trimming the fat, helps me even more today than I thought it would.

Just thought I'd drop this, knowing the shit I will take, because if you actually listen there is useful knowledge here.

 
I doubt you'll get much shit mate.

I'd have thought RT'ers would respect his ability to be a human friggin' metronome.

Dude finds the pocket and stays in it. So does his drummer. :rock:

I went around for years touring with a live jazz ensemble on bass when I was younger and then again on guitar for several years as I was older. Learn a lot from jazz/funk/R&B
