After years of using reactive loads and IRS, I though I would try a mic in front of a cab for a change. Peavey MC 2x12 with Celestion G12k85s. Thanks to Zozobra on GAB for the drum track.

Did another take, this time with my VTM 60. Everything else the same.

Dude that drum jam was a bitch lol... I think it's the slowest I played for a recording ever

As for the new take vs the first one, I really like the first one best. It just reminds me of how my old Ampeg VH-140C would sound on recordings before it literally caught on fire.

And here is my drum jam I did last night, I busted out my midi keyboard and added some keys

Ha! Dig the Stealth-Ampeg comparison. Thanks for the comments!

Nailed it, definitely worth the time you put into it.

Thanks dude, always looking forward to the drum jams

3rd and last take, I promise.

:)

Got a new pedal in the mail today, Caline English Man. Threw it in front of the clean channel on the Stealth. Not great, but not bad for a $28 distortion pedal. Zero time spent on mic placement, just let 'er rip.

Stealth sounds better than the VTM to my ears. Also, there are only a few people that get awesome IR tones, the rest always sound like they are missing something. Your clip with the mic makes the biggest difference and my ear always chooses the mic when I have to compare.

Agreed, appreciate the comments!

I should mention there was some user error on the VTM clip. I sometimes have noisy power in my house so I run my recording laptop on battery power when it's really bad. The laptop gets stressed easily on battery power so it will have digital pops like you get when the buffer rate is not set properly. A work around is to to lower the input volume to the interface and/or remove the overdrive pedal, which is what I did on the VTM clip.

In other words, I need to stop fucking around and get a hum eliminator/power conditioner or get my electrical problem fixed.

:)

I agree and I also favor mic'd clips the majority of the time. It took me awhile and i'm happier with my IR tones lately but it still does not sound like when im playing thru my cab, its similar-ish and works for my late night recording but I may take a stab at mic'ing later on in the year.
