Crunch Comparison - Friedman, Cornford, Marshall, Tyler BW90

I think it's remarkable how different preferences are. Maybe I need some better dirt pedal(s) for that JMP, too.

Depends. I do like the OCD, esp. into a clean or just semi crunch amp. But into an already crunchy JMP? I'd use an overdrive or so . . . (actually I would just mod it :D )

All very close...forced to choose I'd go Marshall, Friedman, Cornford but they're just different shades of great.

I don't get the "no backing tracks" requests. None of these amps are likely to be used in any meaningful way without accompaniment. Who gives a shit what they sound like on their own if they don't sit well in a mix? The only meaningful clips are those done in context...unless you're trying to perfect that basement tone :jerkit:
 
I also think the JMP would fare better with a different boost. Those OCD's are awefulyl gritty and peaky. I ditched mine after a few hrs on my Marshall. I think something a tad smoother like a good ol fashioned screamer OD-9, TS-9 etc... it might also save people a ton of money if they realize they can get ballpark AIC tones without the friedman!
 
Marshall was my fav. All sounded good.

The difference seemed quite minimal. Something a different Toni dial or loop EQ could make any amp sound like the other.
 
The way you have each amp set up they sound very similar and non musicians wouldn't know the differance. But I have to say that for the aic vibe you were going for the Friedman sounded closest as in the clip it has that smooth bognerish voicing, then the jmp , then the cornford , but again all were very close.
 
JMP for me and I'm a big Friedman fan. I like those mids.
 
Both the Marshall and Friedman are being pushed with a boost whereas the Cornford is dialled straight in. I wonder what difference an up front boost might make?

Same here, right from the start. In both clips I like the Cornford the least. And I wasn't blown away when playing one in person.
 
Friedman, JMP, conford.

I would personally use a Friedman, JMP mix. 70-30 mix favoring the Friedman. The JMP would just add a smidgen more presence. Cool clips!
 
Would be cool to see which gets closer with no pedals, just plugged right into amp

Agree.... I would be interested in hearing that. The JMP would need to have the poweramp pushed / cranked more obviously..... etc.

It couldn't be done, it needs to be looked at because there is nasty internal feedback if I turn the gain and master up that much. I've been in touch with Dirk Baldringer, who's been working on Marshalls before many people on this forum were born, so probably he'll get it for an era correct and keeping stock makeover.
