What made the Lexicon PCM 41 so popular?
Features/Sound...?

What else compares or what else today could match it??

Discuss...

Warm, 'bucket brigade' delay. Chandler Echo and SDE3000 are similar sounding delays.

Limited echo time though, alot of guys in the 80's would run multiples of them to make up for it. When you throw in W/D/W you end up with 4 of them to make it worth your time - and at that point its not worth the price. I highly recommend damage control timeline delay's/strymon timelines or the hardwired pedals which are lexicon's in a box. PCM-81's also do well - Zachman is running lexicon stuff in his rack but not the 40/41/42's.

Hey Damian!

The PCM-41/42 and Roland SDE-3000 have a very warm sound to the repeats. Not to mention the modulation on the repeats sounds incredible.. I have yet to hear anything else like them.

On the SDE-1000/3000, you have a button labeled x1/x2. Basically this gives you two different delay ranges to work with, x1 has less delay time available but has much more sharp/clear sounding repeats. Whereas the x2 setting has the longer delay times available but has a high frequency roll off of around 6khz.. Making it sound extremely warm. This is where the SDE really shines IMO.. That warmer delay tone sounds so huge.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but i think the PCM-41 has the same thing too. Some of the older Ibanez delay pedals like the DDL have that high freq roll off on the repeats too, and it sounds really nice.

One thing I can say about my PCM41 is that it has the most amazing, huge, warm chorus that I have ever heard. And unlike many other digital delays, the Lexicon has a tone to it. It is not transparent and with the way it sounds, I wouldn't want it to be. It always had enough delay for me too.

I agree 110%. That Modulation/Chorus from the PCM/SDE delays beats any other Chorus unit i have ever heard..

I've been experimenting with my SDE3000 lately. What is 'the' cool setting for modulation. I usually have my delay time around 580ms with minimal (2) repeats for an ambient delay.

A lot of pro players back in the day used to set the SDE-3000 up for a modulated doubling effect to make their tone sound massive and wide.
26ms delay time, only one single repeat, and then for the modulation set the speed around 25% and depth around 50%. That's the Aldrich and Stryper trick

Hey Dan! thanks for the details

Thanks for the info guys I give some of these a look.

I didn't know the Hardwire pedals were like a Lexicon. Interesting.

Been searching for years for the settings...with a dod fet and a mxr 6 band eq I just might be done...

Yeah, that modulation is pretty much right on...

How do you change patches on them? I do not see midi, did they have a footswitch?

Anyone? I was a pedal user until 2000. how were patches changed on these without a midi pedal?

On the SDE-3000 you have a banks A and B, with each bank having 4 patches. Using a foot-switch, you can move through the presets one by one.

Interesting. Looks like Eddie has the SDE-3000's in his rig from a post I recently saw at HRI.

Yes, EVH has used them since 1986.
