Looking for some opinions from folks who have owned an amp with the Cameron Aldrich mod.

What current production amp gets closest to the Aldrich mod tone?

Correct and incorrect answers welcome, I’m hoping to get some ideas before this thread descends into complete chaos lol  :censored::rock:

The Suhr SE is the original “Aldrich mod” but as you know there’s a wait for it. The Friedman be100 is similar but isn’t as “wild” and is a bit more polished than the se.

Really? I had no clue, the used prices for the SE are way more reasonable. Plus with a new one coming out next year, that’ll be perfect. Any old threads where I can find more info? Thanks a million!

I would look into Monoylith.
-I bet his stuff could get you there and beyond.

I’d look into the Monoylith Skeleton Key,
-the lastest version, like the one I played
at Shea’s shop.
I could hear the bottom end punch with
that Aldrich upper-mid bite.
Nice liquid’y feel to the leads,
-especially when he toggled one of those switch’s.
I was also surprised how not overly tight it was.
The bottom end had just the right amount of
butter on the toast.

I was thinkin’,
-I want a purple one & an evil apple green one.
Get two of those bad boys scorchin’.

Have had both the Super Hi 50 and an OG Cam Aldrich. Didn’t have them at the same time but the Hiwatt sounded like a Fortin Hiwatt to me- the gain has that static-y Hiwatt character to it. Voiced very “modern metal” to my ear. Really cool amp though ultimately not for me. Aldrich was more satisfying to me- more “Marshall” though quite removed from the traditional stock Marshall sound- tons of low end and gain, but still that upper mid bite you need to cut and stay defined. Although not a similar mod circuit wise, Groundzero is very much in the same territory. I find the MOAB to be the next evolution of the modded Marshall. Cameron was pretty ahead of his time but they kind of sound dated at this point. I think the game has changed since his heyday.

My problem is I’m perpetually stuck in the 80s lol

completely missed yours for sale in the classifieds but recently had one offered to me for over $5k which feels high…but if the market will pay it then I’m just priced out hahaha

I don’t think there is anything wrong with being stuck in the 80s. My theory is we are all stuck in some decade, depending on your age. It’s a happy place. For me Miami Vice, Revenge of the Nerds, Ratt, and the introduction to shaved cooters in porn…. Nothing leaves scars like the above; I like it.

Don't apologize for that man, a majority of us here on the forum have the same issue, lol.

The Cameron Aldirch is my favorite high gain tone ever. Almost has able to get one from a friend around 2005 but didn't happen. I've heard an amp similiar in tone but can't remember what it was.

it was just a special time and nothing compares in my book. Probably the case for a lot of us.

If you remember the amp, please do share!

The Suhr version I played long ago was not as 'raw, jagged' as any of the 5 Cam Aldrichs I owned. The closest to a Cam Aldrich is a Golub or LASD Lead modded Marshall. I did hear Martin Golub was still doing these mods...maybe reach out to him and see if this is still the case.
I realize the Suhr is the same circuit but for me, that amp was smooth no matter how I dialed it. Flat feel too.

Interesting you say that about the Suhr. I will say it is a versatile amp depending on how you dial it in. With treble below 5, it is pretty smooth, but when you bump the treble up and the bass back a bit it gets real bitey. The only real difference between the SE amp and martins modded amps were the depth control that John added. I talked to him a month back or so and he recommended making a change to the first coupling cap to shave some bass off and make it a bit more wild. I haven’t tried it yet but I assume that it is closer to the original circuit that Golub had learned from Suhr at CAE.

From what I’ve read, doug started with John’s SE mod and uses the same Suhr modified and tweaked amps to this day live. I haven’t seen anything concrete about Doug ever using the Cameron’s except maybe a recording or two.

Op feel free to message me if you have any more questions about the SE. I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to the CAE mods and history. You could also try finding a CAE 3+SE as well. That is the crunch mod and se mod along with a clean channel wrapped into one preamp.
