Hey any of you guys have a custom Les Paul type custom built? I am starting to plan my 2023 guitar purchases. I think I'm going to grab a Sully V and I would like to add another single cut.

The reason I'm wanting to go custom is I want the full thickness/weight of a LP but with SS frets and luminlay side dots. I know it would be cheaper to just get an LTD but I am not really digging their finish options.

My other thought was just get an older Japanese lawsuit guitar or an epiphone and send it for a SS refret. Hell I tried a compared a couple of Epi to gibson today at Sam ash and was surprised at how well they compared.

Completely off topic but I also tried a couple Michael Kelly guitars while I was there and was surprised that it was a decent guitar. For some reason I've always turned my nose up at them.

Go Greco, 77-87 EG500 or higher. Then have it re fretted like you said. You’ll spend 1k tops on the guitar(unless you want to spend more) and it’s the real LP shape with the real open book HS. Imo a step or two up from Edwards; don’t have exp with Burny/Tokai/Orville etc.

I should mention that if you go Greco make sure it has a serial#. 1977-87 will have them on the back of the HS

The Orville’s I tried I thought were very good, particularly my friend’s SG. Tokai’s were meh IME. Haven’t tried Burny. El Degas LP’s I remember also being decent for old Japanese guitars, but not my faves

I just bought a ‘84 Greco Sykes LP on Tom’s recommendation and I love it. Definitely a couple steps up from Edwards, and as much as I dig Bacchus guitars, I’d put it above their LP’s that I’ve had. It feels extremely solid and it plays and sounds great. It’s got a mean, dark growl to it that my newer guitars just don’t have. The bridge was beat so I replaced it, and it’s getting a fret leveling, but I expected it to need a little TLC considering it’s age. I’ll definitely be buying more.

I had an Orville by Gibson LPC-57B that was a top notch LP. Shoulda kept it and did what you're thinking of.

Greco does sound appealing. Getting it refretted does sound like a more reasonable route. Seems like most companies have some fucked up shape on single cuts or the charge 5k for one without many options

There are other brands that are great too but there's some sneaky knowledge needed to make sure you are getting a real MIJ clone vs one made in a different country...the Grecos are pretty straightforward with the serial# confirming it's a MIJ guitar.

Yeah it does get confusing. I was window shopping for Grecos yesterday and it does look like there are some really good options for not a whole hell of a lot of money. Typically what would be a fair price for one? I saw some that were like 5-600 then others that were 1100-1200

Right now I can find some that have wear n tear, not trashed for 7-800. Mint ones may get you to 1-1200
