Fuck! why does this shit always happen to me?
Fed Ex shows up @ 7:50 pm after I skipped my sons baseball game so I could check out my new amp. Unpack it and it is mint, just like described. Plug it in and switch it on and I hear a humming, which I find odd since it's on stand by. Well I flip the stand by switch and nothing but buzzing/static/noise(no not my playing).

Help?
WTF?
Any one? Bad tube. I found it odd that there was a piece of paper in the manual that said it contained extra preamp tubes in case there was a bad one. Well there were no extra tubes included...

Next time you'll go to your sons game huh?? ...Sounds like a power tube went south from the humming you describe...The buzzing static sounds usually a pre tube..??

I'm not really a tube guru. Can i take the power tubes out of my XXX to see if that's the problem?

Before you do anything, can you contact the person you bought it from? Once you tamper with it, you may void any chance you have of having the seller resolve the issue. Just my 2 cents.

Did the amp shut down??
No the longer it's on the louder the noise gets. Plus the power tube monitor lights are not on.

Haven't tampered with anything.

Light bulb based current limiter

I built mine in under 20 minutes for less than $10

easy peasy

just plug in the amp you just got fedex/ups and power it up

it will let you know if you have a short which will burn & destroy an output transformer or power transformer (ie bad power tube or other type of direct short)

save your sanity and your $$

feel free 2 pm me if you want more info

???

NOTE: for those assuming the problem is a shorted output tube - an output tube with a direct short can and most likely will burn out 1 or both of your power transformer and output transformer !

its when a direct short draws a shit load of of current which in turn causes the damage.

So, next time you get your amp fixed & before powering up the 1st time make your self a current limiter to test for excessive current draw

http://thenormster.com/DumbleLite/Bu...ly%20Guide.htm (see the bottom of the page for the drawing of the one I made & HEEDTHE WARNINGS !!!!)

Note - you don't need the switch shown in the geofex diagram (I use my power strip to turn it on and off !)

Believe me this simple device will save you $$ & your Sanity !!

MOST IMPORTANT - If you don't have any Electrical Experience or this method is confusing to you - Don't try it on your own !!!

Find someone who knows exactly what their doing to build it for you and show you how to use it properly !!

DISCLAIMER - the high volt caps inside of a tube amp can & will kill you even when its unplugged from the wall socket(learn to discharge them properly !!) - and NEVER EVER mess around inside a tube amp when its plugged in the wall socket !!!

Engl fireball?
I checked the website and it says there 2X6L6 and 1X ECC83(12AX7) in the power section.
If your XXX has 6L6 type tubes in it, then you could swap them out.
See if that works.
If you flip the power switch on and it does the same. STOP. Turn it off immediately and take it to a tech.

According to the manual 2 6L6 (this is the 60wt). I better wait to hear from the seller before I mess with it too much. I'm really bummed though  . To late to jam anyway, kids are in bed :(

I appreciate the help and may need some more tomorrow

did you purchase new or used, if new I maybe able to help you, if used, I would still be happy to try...
Josh

P.M sent Josh.
I put the power tubes from my XXX in the Engl tonight.... No change. On a bright note though the seller called and told me that he is willing to do whatever it takes to make it right.
Should I just send it back and get my money back or have it fixed at his expense?

PI tube?

if you think the seller is honest, i'd think it would be a tube that got beat up during shipping?

might as well replace all the tubes before giving up, just don't get carried away turning it up when trying it.

at least yours didn't start smoking with a burnt electrical smell, my first fireball did. Sent that sucker right back. 2nd one I got was great for over 3 years though.
