Dammit those Gibson prices

Fuck me............Gibson just keeps hiking them prices up. I got an update last night from the Music Zoo and prices have skyrocketed. I don't know how they justify some of the custom shop prices they do and worse, who's paying $9000 for a relic, Les Paul Custom or some reissue. I can't get over the Billy Gibbon's L{P for $36,000.

But, hell, now I don't feel so bad paying real, luthier, custom shop guitar prices for guitars from Nik Huber or David McNaughts in the $4K range, or a few Andersons in the $3K range.

I feel the same way, I know of some strat players, who will buy a Mexi, swap the neck for a Warmoth, put a decent set of pickups in it, and have a FANTASTIC Strat! Some of these "Collector" guitars are too expensive to play! and IMHO a Guitars main purpose is to make music, not sit in a humidor on display!
 
Hold the phone! Are you saying that a run-of-the-mill Custom is now priced around $9K or did I mis-read your post?

The VOS guitars all took a hike. The LP Custom looks like it took a small rise too. But, no, I am not talking about the run of the mill Custom model. I am talking about something made by man, like some of the master builders, not by machine.

If I wanted to put one together, I suppose I would buy a kit. But, I head off in different directions. Don't like Charvels, Jackson's, Strats, etc. The only Fender I like is my James Root Tele's and they are made in Mexico. I love Tom Anderson Drop Top's but a Strat to me feels like playing a 2x4 compared to them. For me it is Anderson Drop Tops, Nik Huber and McNaught single cuts.

The best guitars are the ones that make you want to play, the ones that speak to your soul and evoke your creativity. It could be a $150 Xaviere or a $15000 Warrior, everyone has a different feel for the music.

it all comes down to what makes you want to play
 
The Tuttle at TM was fun to play in the LP -esque category___ Actually it sounded wicked with the MC PU's installed in it .. 4k
There is a nice NEW Historic vos at sherman oaks GC for under 5.. They will still be all over ebay from -- 4-7k

As a new marker yes a change but for the astute guitar lover__ no real change

Which is exactly why I don't own one and have no respect for them. :thumbsdown:
 
I have a '07 Blonde beauty basically un played sitting in the case and a '07 1960 reissue sitting in the case. I mostly play my Fender USA Deluxe. :)
 
Good job I already own the Gibsons I want.

This shit is getting out of hand.
 
$9k for a gibson, I can't see who in their right mind would pay that.
You're right Steve $3k for an Anderson is a much better deal.
Gibson have lost their minds don't they realize our economy is in really bad shape....
I heard Martin created new acoustic lines to lower prices dramatically. Instead Gibson increases prices. I don't get it?
 
All this for a guitar that has QC issues. I was talking to someone who is a non-musician. He said he had seen me on stage with a Gibson and was asking about it in admiration. I explained that it actually belongs to the bass player and that I had just bought a new Suhr telecaster. His eyes glazed over in boredom. Gibson and Fender are household names just like Nabisco and Clorox. Doesn't matter who owns them anymore or how they are made.
 
Theres plenty of people who pay for it, just check out some of the threads on MLP forum and TLP forums, those guys buy alot of the expensive gibsons.

Gibsons have become very expensive for sure, they are selling lots of sig models like the pearly gates, jimmy page, clapton, rossington, slash and many others. People are buying them too, those really expensive 20k and up are mostly sold out. There was 250 vos pearly gates made and theres only a few left at dealers, the one at the music zoo that is signed and aged is used, that is just a example. I know of a couple of those guitars that sold for 30k.
Last year i wanted a jimmy page number 2 and the only one i could find left was a used one and i bought it and it was a nice guitar, 6 months later i needed cash and i sold it and made 1300 profit, i sold that guitar on ebay for 8k, i sold it the first day i listed it too.
I saw 4 or 5 of the signed and aged page sell for 25k quick.

I also owned 4 of the signed and aged slash guitars and i sold them for 7 and 8k and i ha no trouble sellig them, that was 3 years ago. In the last year i saw a couple of them sell on ebay for 9 and 10k.
 
We're not talking about guitars for players...these are aimed at collectors, a completely different crowd with a very different agenda. Players who want to play Gibsons have to sort through the "regular" stuff and try to find that elusive good one.
 
Yes i agree, they do a good job of targeting the collector crowd, the regular guys arent buying 10k and up les pauls to gig with. It sucks that they are so expensive.
 
I feel like my plain top G0 was a bang for the buck guitar when I got it, it's the best overall guitar I've ever owned, a really nice custom shop for $2600 new out the door when I bought it 4 years ago (I played about 50 different LP's before found this one). I get compliments on it just about every show I play too. However no way in hell I would ever pay Gibson's prices for a similar guitar thats 2-3K more just because it has a fancy flame top. When you have guys buying guitars based on the top or even better the "relicing" for that much money and not the feel or tone, Gibson is going to keep getting away with high prices.
 
Both of my Gibsons I got used for good prices, there's just no way a new gibson is worth 9k, even as an investment IMO. You can easily get a very nice vintage gibson at that price that will hold it's value. For new guitars I really think anything over 3k is pushing it, don't really care who makes it or what it is.

True to a degree, but you're essentially stuck with a LP Jr/SG Special for that kind of cash for a solid body Gibson electric. These guys' collections are just as much for the "Ohhh and Ahhh" factor as they are for any true investment purposes. A Pearly Gates replica has alot more "wow" to it than a tocacco burst Jr. And to date, many of the limited run LPs have actually gained in value.

As for vintage guitars holding value, try telling that to the guys who payed top dollar for a P90 Goldtop or TV Jr at the peak of the market a few years back. About the only "guarantees" when it comes to vintage Gibsons are '57-'60 LP Standards and original Explorers and Vs.
