I spoke of this earlier in another thread about trees, can't find it now;
I bought this tree at a "reputable" landscaping firm that's been here for decades, it was labled Red Maple which i thought was a tree with permanent red leaves. It was early spring and it was bare so i couldn't tell.
Well, this is what i got. It continues to branch out like a bush or shrub regardless of pruning. The pics show it eaten up by japanese beetles but with new growth coming on and if you zoom in, you can see the bark pretty clearly. Any idea what this is?

The leaves and bark remind me of a paper bark birch?
But that is a wild guess lol.
Doesn't look like any maple i have seen?
Yea definitely not a maple that I’ve ever seen.

Red maples will get red in the fall, and the stems going from the branch to the leaf are always red.

Could maybe be a black birch? Betula Lenta. Do the leaves get yellow/gold in the fall? Not sure I’ve seen a multi stem variety of it though.

IIRC leaves are just depressing brown after a freeze.
Thinking about the bark and it does resemble birch except it's deep red.
It's basically a blah shrub that does nothing spectacular, it just is. But it's in a good spot to provide privacy from ever-increasing road traffic....I'm just pretty sure it's no kind of maple, and i haven't been back to that particular landscape dealer since, damn crooks.

And speaking of mockingbirds, never had one nesting here before but they are vicious protectors. My cat is a big kitten at 1 1/2 years old and a great tree climber, she must have got close to the nest; when she gets out and about the mockingbirds dive-bomb her, i see her running and the birds diving down at her....she heads for shelter.
Eh.....do we have a bird forum here?

You wouldn't guess it but I am a birder. And Mockingbirds are my favorite birds. They look like little fighter jets. They are very good at mimicking other birds. Not enough to fool Merlin though.
Cool! I've been hearing a bobwhite's distinctive call but suspect it may be the mockingbird doing it's thing.
Lots of RW Blackbirds around and i know their call. Following it to see the bird, there was just a mockingbird doing it's call. Amazing.
