That's what I'm wondering with the EMG-81 that's in my Charvel, was the pickup that was in the guitar when I got it in the 90's. I replaced with new 9 volt battery and sounds all weak and thin??

I got a reply email back from EMG on my issues with mine in my Charvel model 5fx:

Off the top of my head, I am not sure what would cause the pickups to suddenly become thinner and weaker all across the board. If it is something that affects all the pickups, it is likely to be part of the wiring because it is very unlikely that all the pickups would fail in the exact same way all at once.

As for the pickups mentioned, most of them are bar magnets, so you don’t have to worry about the spacing, but for the ones with exposed poles we do offer F-spaced pickups. The routing on the pickup cables shouldn’t really matter much, the cables should be long enough to reach regardless.
