So, I was playing my Friedman, started humming, then made a sound like amp cutting off. Now the tubes don't even turn on(turn reddish and heat up). The fuse appears to burned out as there is that little burn type mark on one of them. If the fuse is bad, the tubes wont even warm up?

thanks in advance.

UPDATE: took tubes to electronic store, they tested the tubes for me, the power tubes that is, and they said all the tubes are in great condition. I bought a fuse, and put the tubes and fuse in the amp. the amp now turns on, but there is a pretty bad hum still happening??????????

even though tubes tested good, could it still be a tune like you guys suggested??

thanks

That hum was a redplating tube. Replace your tubes and fuse. If i happens again, you have an issue other than tubes. Could be many things, bad socket, lose wire, cold solder joint in your bias circuit.
He asked if you were drunk because if you did not replace your fuse, when it's clearly blown, you are not in your best state of awareness Mike LOL

A power tube most likely arc'd blowing the fuse. Replace the tubes. If I feel it's a bad tube I will usually put a 1 amp fast blow, or even half amp in , if it will work in the amp. Then put three known good tubes in the amp with my bias tester in the last socket. I then sub each of the tubes in and see if one causes an issue. This way you don't throw out all of the tubes that were in initially.

If you listen closely, or watch the tubes, you will be able to power down when one starts to make that unmistakable plating hum. Or, you will see it start to glow red. Power down immediately. This doesn't always work and they will all seem ok. At that point I will not use them.

I think he's summarizing what happened, not in any particular order. Lol. Only time I had this situation was a Ceriatone Cali mod, the PT went out. Hopefully that's not the case here. Good luck!

This.

And buy extra fuses while you are at it and don't turn the amp on anymore until you at least get a new fuse in there. Then if it redplates again, shut down immediately and order up some new tubes. And buy extra tubes while you are at it. Good luck and hang in there....I know it can be stressful.

These guys are spot on Mike! This happened to me this past year with brand new tubes..one must have just shorted out on the trip here.
New fuse, new tubes all has been well.

not drunk. just thought I remembered tubes heating up with a blown fuse in past, but I guess not.

If if pilot light is out you blew the mains fuse, or the other one if pilot is on.. 4 amp slo blo mains and 1 amp slo blo ht fuse. Get a new set of power tubes and have the amp biased.. we use EH el34s now for reliability.

Mike, maybe a drink will help? a good single malt Scotch perhaps.
I’ll have one for ya...sounds like some good advice all around on this thread. There’s hope for us yet!!
