Doesn't he use Demeter preamps or something? Guy has always had a great tone in my book

Yup, Demeter TGP-3 preamps into VHT Classic power amps in stereo with AC30s. His tone always has been incredible. Not sure why he doesn't seem to be the target of tons of tone chasers. Every bit as great of tone as someone like Adam Jones, who's gear people are obsessed with emulating.

I saw STP about 10 years or so ago, and he was using the exact same rig. Sounded great. I think he blends them all at the same time because you could hear a clean tone mixed in with the dirty. His sound had great clarity to it.

I've seen them three times now over the years and he always has great tone live!

Nice pics! Thanks for posting this up! I remember around the "No.4" album, he was raving about the Vox AC30s...

Didn't he also use the CAE preamp at one point? I remember he had the looser sound of those for some of their tones.

Hes been using essentially the same rig since the early 90s

That dudes needs a dirty shirley, like BAD! That amp was made for a guy like him.

I don't think he should change a thing. He has had impeccable live tone every time I've seen him, no need to mess it up by trying other gear. He does, however, need to get Weiland back asap.

They don't need Weiland, at least not this Weiland, they need 95' Weiland back, not the 2000's christmas album/self-important Weiland

I saw STP in 2013 at the Vic here in Chicago. Disappointing show to say the least. They played maybe 45 minutes after coming out hours late. I was underwhelmed and felt ripped off. It was pretty clear that they were going through the motions. Hell, Velvet Revolver was a better show only a few years earlier in a much worse venue. I couldn't believe it.

STP was one of my favorite bands growing up too. I still think Tiny Music is one of the best albums put out in the '90's (which is my favorite decade for rock music...)

They can still write cool music, but not when Weiland is involved. The new song is actually cool musically, just doesn't work with Chester. He's not terrible but I just can't buy it..doesn't sound right.

The album they did a few years back with Scott was just awful.. sounded like an uninspired wanna-be Dylan/Aerosmith tribute album . Army Of Anyone with Richard Patrick was really cool. I'd be happy if they gave that another go.

Getting back to the topic though; Dean's tone is and has always been great. I agree that the Dirty Shirley would suit his playing but I love his Demeter/VHT/AC30 rig.

I've been giving the Chester stuff repeated listenings whilst working out and its grown on me.
I initially didn't like it, but now I'd be happy for a new cd with him singing. The music rox.
