I've always been a boost in front and nothing else type guy, but I'm currently looking to try to start messing around with effects.

Instead of piecing together a pedalboard, I'd like to just get a cheap but effective effects unit.

Any recommendations? Line 6 m9 looks interesting.

I have an M5, and it sounds great. It's my swiss army knife pedal. If I didn't have it, I'd have a pedalboard twice it's current size. I use it strictly for effects. I don't use any of the overdrives/distortions.

The M9 is just a more versatile version. It'd probably be a good fit for you.

TC Electronics Nova is dirt cheap and sounds great, good quality. I had one for a while and enjoyed it. It’s made just for the loop, there’s no OD’s or anything in it. But everything you’d need in a loop.

Can you use more than one effect at a time on the M5?

Did not know about this one, I'll check it out!

that's why the M9 is better IMO. The M5 only allows 1 at a time. I went with the M5 just because I didn't want to be out too much cash if I didn't like the effects, but they hold their own just fine. I use it for a lot of specialty FX that I only need for single tunes.

The delays are very good, the verbs aren't bad either, even the ambient ones like particle, etc. But the opto trem is great, as are the vibe effects.

MS-3. All effects, great switching possibilities, very usable overdrives, noise gate, 4cm. Robust construction and small footprint. Best all-in-one solutions for average Joe ever made.

You could buy a used Boss GT3, GT5, GT8, GT10

They are cheap and offer so many more tonal options.

I have been using the Gt-10 for years with my Peavey 5150 mainly for midi channel switching and for effects. It has 3 parametric or graphic equalizers and high/low pass filters which shape my core tone.

4cm works great too. I have used the Roland JC-120 preamp sim for clean tones and my amps distortion for heavy tones and it sounds fantastic.

Fractal FX8. You can find them used for $700. Has 2 built in relays to allow you to change your amps channels. Works great on my BE100 and Bogner Helios. Has built in scenes to all you different preset sounds for each of your amp channels. In 4cm has excellent pre and post amp effects. Personally I love the OD's in the FX8 as I love how you have so many extra parameters to allow you to precisely dial in the tone you are after. Also gives excellent pre and post noise gates that are extremely adjustable.

This.

I still dig my Digitech RP1000. I use it for FX only, and the volume pedal doubles as a poor man's attenuator. I can crank my amp, and use the RP as a master.

TC Nova units are fantastic.

Maybe a strymon mobius and blue sky?

HX FX are $100 until Thursday. 2 loops plus 2 external amp controllers and it can act as a midi controller.

Or I have an M13 for sale :)

that would be over 75% off the usual price. Where is this exactly? I'll buy one right now if that's the case.

Ah, ok Ned, no prob!

Even still it's a pretty good deal, considering they're usually $450-$475 on the used market.
