I need to quantify my witty comments above as I had a vantage on Metallica that was special.
I have so many stories - way too many to type.

I got to help load in their equipment at a dive bar in Yonkers [the rising sun] in 1983 when I was still in H.S. and the MUYA demo was all we had to listen to.
there were 30-40 people in the club,
It was the sickest experience of my life - never to be replicated.

cliff in the bell bottoms and the denim jacket with his eyes rolling back into his skull
My neck hurt for days after that show and I am not exaggerating.
got to hang with them and smoked joints with cliff and kirk 4 times, my friend has a cassette tape of one of those smoke out sessions - it was behind a red roof inn 1985 in Poughkipsie NY when they opened for WASP.

The next night they played L'amour and my bro got a black eye in the pit.
We got kill em' all before anyone else did because we were friends with Harold of rock and roll heaven and johnny z.
I was so lucky to be IN the tape trading scene and was exposed to soooooo much sick shit.
We read KICK ASS MONTHLY like a Bible because Bob Muldowney Fucking ruled!

I got to see them 6-7 times from 83-86

in 86 they opened for ozzy at the Nassau coliseum and we were back stage.They played for about 30 minutes.
we had an advance cassette of MOP before it was mastered and we knew that this was it - they were going to the next level - and they did - rapidly.

When that happened we lost touch with the inner core of the scene and by then we were deeply into other bands like slayer, voi vod. blessed death, exodus, toxik ,crumbsuckers, agnostic front, megadeth [i got stories here too] and possessed, DEATH,Nasty Savage, King Diamond SOD OVERKILL etc etc.

When they blew up with the black album we got guest listed 10th row at the meadowlands and we walked out after 3-4 songs - totally bummed and depressed because it was not the same band anymore.

I stopped caring about them after and justice for all dropped - we HATED that POS album.


I was blessed that i got to see them before they were ANYTHING and before they got paid.
let me tell you they were fucking on fire!

cliff was an unnatural force of nature and he did not give a fuck about anything except being as metal and fucking musical as possible.

Kirk was a total wasteoid - ACID WEED PILLS BOOZE he would take anything you gave him COMPLETE BURNOUT and he peaked as a guitar player on MOP.

James was/is a tall ornery brooding, bossy menacing drunk and back then and he ALWAYS had issues and was clearly troubled - hence the fodder for his lyrics and devastating right hand/rhythms.

Lars was just an overachieving friendly fellow metal head not the cocksucking corporate cunt douche he is now - though there were most def early shades of it.

Cliff spoke just like jeff spicoli from fast times at ridgemont high and he was the most chilled out unassuming weirdo you'd ever want to hang with.

People and times change and nothing stays the same.

Watching the 2020 version of this band is heartbreakingly painful and they never will be what they were ever again.
