And I'm not sure if it's the Version 2 model, but I have another Peters bridge pickup with an Alnico 8 magnet that I'm going to have installed in my Ibanez JS1200 soon. I'll do a shootout of that one also.

What's a Version 2 model?

I just made that second pickup a variant of Design 1 with A8, slightly different wire, and somewhat different polepieces because you mentioned your other guitar was so bright sounding. All three of those choices make it slightly warmer, a little at a time, so that's the warmest version of that pickup. Your guitar will still dominate the sound overall though, so I suspect it'll sound basically the same in that guitar as your other Design 1 pickup sounds in the Les Paul.

And yeah the pickup was tailored just for me. And the beauty of it is that James will tailor his pickups for anyone.
Just tell him about the guitar the pickup is for and the tonal requirements, and he will make it exactly to suit your needs. So awesome!

I'll try, in any case. Telling me "my guitar is mahogany" etc. though doesn't help in the least. If the guitar sounds bright, dark, boomy, dead, whatever--that's what I need to know (especially if there's more info like "I tried X pickup and Y pickup in it, and they sounded like this to me" etc.) If I were to presume something about the sound based on "what a certain tonewood is supposed to sound like", I could easily get it wrong, since wood is inherently inconsistent. I can "lean" my designs one way or another in a few aspects, so if a guitar is problematic somehow as long as you can describe that to me, I can make the pickup to help compensate (as much as reasonably possible).

and finally to James, are these available to order?

Yes. A couple dozen people have them already but they're not listed on my site yet. Very soon they will be.

@JamesPeters How much is a pickup shipped to europe?

$120 USD plus shipping. Shipping is probably $50 USD (based on a price I'd gotten while shipping pickups to Australia, and to Singapore). Email me your location for a proper shipping quote other than "Europe". It's a pretty big place after all. :)

Really great shootout, I love my 2DBBs but the extra chunk on the Peters was \m/ ... could totally see using that, excellent!
Thanks Steve. :)
Yeah same here. Still love all my MCP's, but it's nice to have another option in the mix.

Ahhhh got it! So it's a bit like the magnet switches changing the voicing of the JB to a Distortion and vice versa?

Yeah I learned a long time ago that tonewood types are a very loose ballpark. Exact same guitars can sound vastly diifferent (my experience with two Ibanez JS1200's as just one example). I should have specified to talk about the sound of the guitar. Cheers mate.

Um...sort of, but not really. :) The JB has a standard sized A5 magnet and Distortion has a taller ceramic magnet. That difference is pretty noticeable.

In my pickups, you don't hear the same differences to the same degree when swapping magnets. C8 for instance works well in my pickups without sounding harsh/grating (and still gets chime, growl, etc.) There are still differences when swapping magnets, but some of those changes aren't quite what you'd expect if you've been swapping magnets in Duncans for instance.

And the difference between A8 and C8 in my pickups is quite minor. I only used the A8 because it was "a little bit warmer" in terms of what it could contribute (without going right to A5 since that wouldn't have had the same punch as A8 or C8). The different wire and polepieces that I used were more important changes than A8 versus C8 magnet. Once my current stock of A8 is depleted I won't be buying more.

No problem! I was just saying that for anyone reading it. Most people start by saying "well my guitar is mahogany (etc.) so what works best for that?" and then I have to ask "what does the guitar actually sound like, is the attack tight enough, what 'problems' did you hear with other pickups" etc. I guess some pickup makers like saying "this pickup works best for mahogany" etc. :)
