Destruction of "Stairway to Heaven" on American Idol...

It was Vai's killer doubleneck JEM that originally caught my eye. Once I saw that, I tuned in and watched the whole damn tune. Barker was overplaying and trying to show off, MJB was trying to show her soulfulness and vocal range (singing out of tune), and the girl guitar player from Australia sounded like she had a Metal Zone plugged directly into the board.

I try my very best not to slam fellow musicians but that just didn't work at all IMHO. Led Zeppelin is the primary reason I play music....so I guess it just gets to me when a group of overindulgent jackasses destroy one of thier tunes like that

If you watch american idol and are disgusted you have no one to blame, but yourself. :poke:

Glad to see I am not the only one who doesn't watch American Idol.

This is the studio version of the "Destruction of Stairway to Heaven" and it's not any better. This was done for a charitable cause I believe but leave a classic song alone and just write a new Mary J. Blige tune with Vai, Orianthi, T. Barker and R. Jackson.

i think you guys need to recalibrate with a true failure:

how many prescription drugs was the director on???

"i have a great idea...punch your heads through the bottom of these jellyfish and act like overtly caucasian fools for old people, m'kay?"

the comments on this one crack me up!

oh yeah, the bar was raised with that one....

I caught a brief glimpse of the American Idol Massacre last night - that was pretty bad.

WTF ? Why is some Taylor Swift wanna be on guitar playing leads when Steve Vai is right there?

More to the point, I'd love to hear the judges reviews of MJB ruining this classic with her unsoulfull, out of tune warbling !!!!

They should have kicked her off and kept the Peter Brady looking kid.

Even Annie Lennox & EJ were awful.

it was like driving by a carwreck. you just have to look.

It was more like a car hitting a pedestrian, then the car being hit by a train, and then an airplane crashing into it, while a building collapses on the whole mess.

really guys the STH performance wasn't that bad to me....?

this:

was bad

no one should ever sing that song besides plant.....except maybe Axl Rose.

The line I highlighted is, to me, far and away the most disturbing thing I've read in this thread. I really have trouble wrapping my head around that's being possible...

I watched the whole thing.

I found the whole show very odd. ALL of the vocalists were off, even Alicia Keys. That's saying a lot, she's got a great voice. Annie Lennox was on, but the singing as a whole was very bad. Not sure why. Mary J Blige has a great voice as well. I cannot even imagine her singing out of tune, but she did. Strange.

Like someone mentioned above, I don't like to bash musicians, but I cannot for the life of me understand why they are pushing Orianthi so much. There are plenty of fantastic guitar players around the world that just slay. I guess they're not as cute.

Poor Vai had to be up there thinking, what have I gotten myself into?

I feel bad for Vai. Anyone think he was wondering why the fuck he didn't get the lead solo????

I mean its not like he is one of the best guitar virtuosos' and lead players currently alive or anything :poke:

Because Orianthi is up the music industry's anus right now. she's decent but solidly average compared to the sea of other musicians out there (without breasts) and I think that's the main reason.

Santana found an easy way to re-insert himself into the mainstream music scene with a hot new "apprentice" and probably slid her the Michael Jackson gig and when that didn't work out they had to do something with her so they slung her in the rest of the bland pop crap scene.

I think Vai rode the orianthi coat tail a bit too much. He would have slaughtered her if he did the solo but I think he also would have probably butchered it in his own unique way just as bad as she did... you don't improv the stairway solo unless your name is jimmy page.. you just don't.. that solo is sacred and untouchable. If she wanted to impress, she should have played it note for note.

I agree 100%

Hell even page destroyed that epic solo live.... that is one of very few solo's that should always be played 100% note-for-note and never improv. And ya I kinda got the feeling that if Vai had done the solo it would have some ghey whammy bar action goin on..... but it would have been better than the craptastic version she played.... I mean is the original really that hard to play note-for-note??? Why does everyone feel the need to make their own craptastic rendition of that solo?? Page had it right the first time... stop trying to do it better than him.....

THis kinda crap pisses me off.....

And one more thing.

She really fucked up the EVH/MJ Beat it solo something awful when I saw here play it in a video somewhere. Again, another perfect solo that should be played note-for-note and not improv...

I agree with both of you. There are certain songs and solos that shouldn't be altered. I'm all for putting your own creative stamp on things as an artist but there are certain iconic tunes that deserve a smidge of reverence. Stairway to Heaven is one of those tunes and the guitar solo Jimmy laid down originally fit it perfect.
