Hey guys, first time posting and hopefully you can help. Long story short is my current rig setup involves an EVH 50w combo and I love the sound of the evh amps. I played it in previous bands but just joined a new one and have two problems. First it's too heavy for me. I had back surgery about four months ago and just can't do the 100 pound combo amp anymore. Second problem is this new band wants to be completely speakerless meaning I need to go DI into the PA. I play in an 80s tribute band so that evh tone works perfectly for me. I have two options... one get a load box and speaker cab simulator like the ones suhr makes but I am not sure how they sound vs micing and I would have to buy a new head (probably the evh 50w head) for the weight. Other option is to get a tube amp with DI capabilities like a Hughes and kettner tubemeister, but once again I don't know how these sound specifically for the style I want to play but also how the DI function works on these in general. Anyone have any experience, thoughts, or alternative solutions to my problem? The cheaper the better and I still want to have an evh amp or some sort in my possession meaning if I decide to buy a 50w head I am willing to sell the combo but if not then I would want to keep the combo. Anyways thanks in advance. Thanks

Sounds to me you are a ripe candidate for the modeling cult! That's only partially a joke. Looking for a certain sound, but know you'll have to compromise because of physical limitations. Band wants to go straight into PA. All the stuff that argues for digital stuff, and leaves out the sound issue, b/c you can't use the exact amp you want anyway.

Maybe an ISP Theta Pro ? Or a Fractal AX8 ? Helix ?

I would get a 5150 or slo style tube preamp,ex: effectrode blackbird and a DI cabinet solution such as CAB or iconoclast.

If tube doesnt matter try the new mooer 5150 preamp.

A Two Notes Torpedo Live will let you play your amp and home and go direct with the band with the same setup minus the cab.
