Dude, I got 5 great tube amps but they rarely get played. They are great though.
My Axe-Fx II is also great. The Kemper seems like it's very cool as well.
It's all a never ending tone chase no matter how you slice it. Nobody ever gets there, but that's the beauty of it.

I've been through a bunch of cheap to moderate amps over the last few years, but reality of 2.5 small kids in the house has set in, and because of that the POD HD is awesome. Ive kept the DC-5 because it's "my sound", but I only really use it when I'm jamming with friends.
I still want a Mini Rec and an RA-100 though.

after playing modelers and preamp/power amp rigs for years but never have tried any axefx product....in the past 2 years, i've recently gotten back into amps and tubes and tube amps after saying for all those years how i'd never get back into them, that technology is just too far along to have to deal with the tediousness of it.
and, one thing i can say, even though it's obvious: theres NOTHING that compares gearwise to standing in front of your full stack moving air around your body and making your teeth hurt!!!!!!!! nothing.
that being said, everything has it's place, and, if i can at some point, i'd like to check out an axe fx ultra or even 2 and see where i could apply it to what i do. at this point, i hate my one neighbor, so fuck him...and the other 2 neighbors love listening to me play! so, away it is with the volume knob!

I got an Axe FX II not long ago. I am still gearwhoring, but it's home studio and audio equipment, tools for work, guitars, and lately I've been considering collecting some common heads and cabs for recording/comparison purposes.

I sold my axe fx ultra for various reasons and now im back to playing a blackstar ht-5 through a 1x10 cab "tung sol preamp". To me the blackstar sounds better and more responsive "just feels better". Ive been boosting that with a maxon 808 in the loop of my ns-2. With a little carbon copy through the loop. After owning the axe fx i figured out i dont need all of that shit. And im a believer that tube amps feel, sound, and look better. whener i play out i just borrow an amp and a cab. As long as i have my delay and my overdrive im fine. i dont think ill ever buy a modeler again. I end up tweaking more than playing.

True. A lot of guys go through that. I did, but not any more. I plug a great Stratocaster into a couple pedals and into a Plexi and I can do anything I want or need. If I want to do really heavy stuff I plug into my Triple Rec. Done. No need for a room full of amps.
It really doesn't have to be a constant search. I work on my playing, songwriting and my tone instead of flipping amps.

So... Yes, it did, but not in the way everyone thinks (except Glassjaw7)...
I do like modellers. Really. I had the Axe FX, I know have the HD 500. Great stuffs, tons of possibility, sounding great. I don't say Holy Grail/Mother of Tone, but really usable. I really love the all-in-one format of the HD 500. I'll keep this baby for small jams, for sure. But when I want to sound right, I switch to tubes. No matter what, it's a feeling, it's the pleasure of having some almost living hardware, it's all the stuff that makes a real amp sounds "better", even if that's just in my head...
So I stick to the tube amp. For now I just have a modeller because of important needs of mobility, but soon enough I'll be back in business. And here the modellers helped me. I currently live in a country (Romania) where it's very hard to find gear which is not beginner oriented... so I used the modellers to find the sounds I like. It's not like the real deal, but at least it's, with the modern modellers, not that far. Being able to play with tons of effects, being able to use them how I wanted when I wanted made me know what I really need, when I really need, so now I'm planning to get a complete rig (already started actually) based on my modeller years.
So I'd say : keep a modeller at home, use it for experiments, then buy the real deal. That's how I work.

I just integrated my modeler into my live rig. It's a JCM 800 2204 w/loop. I added a rp1000 running it 4CM and it gave me a huge range of additional tones available to me for live use. Although, the 800 with a TS or DS is still my favorite and main tone, the unit works great for a little versitility with my cover band.
It'll be tough for a modeler to completely replace my amp.

I went the opposite direction too. I got my first Axe-Fx Standard, and turned into MAJOR GAS for the real amps. Now I have the real amps, and recently got the Axe-Fx Ultra. Sounded DAMN GOOD. Now I'm selling the tube amps, and getting an Axe 2. Hopefully this will get me off the merry go round too...
