Im looking to buy another amp. What do you guys think? I had a Vh4 from diezel did not like it at all wasnt my thing, But the vids for the herbert gave me bad gas. I also heard the kr7 thats was heavy as a f*ck. So Any advice would be great.

Also if anyone is selling a kr7 let me know.

I play fast detuned drop b drop A metal ala slipknot, pantera, gojira, etc.....
Comments? Complaints,? Rants?

so you play bass? ;)

Mailman is your guy...he's owned them all

I've had lots of experience with the VH4, Herbert, Rivera and a few others. What are you looking for in an amp and why didn't you like the VH4? Those questions will help me understand what you're looking for in a high-gainer. If you hated the VH4, chances are you'll also hate the Herbert.

I have to disagree about the VH4. There are plenty of people who hate the VH4 and love the Herbert and vice versa.

I have played the KR7 pretty extensively and it kind of reminds of a VHT UL but with a bit more saturation with a different mid range.

:gethim:

Yeah I owned them both.

Still have the Herbert. That will go NO WHERE!
The Rivera KR7 is a beast in its own. More "Growly" if that makes sense?
Slipknot'ish' tones?
I like the gain of the Herbert better. But its also about $1000.00 more then the KR7.
If money wasnt a object....I would get the Herbert. If not.....
I would still hold out for the Diezel!
Yeah....its that BAD ASS!

Dont get me wrong.....the KR7 is a crushing machine but its not as 'smooth' as the Herbert sounds.
Probably not much help here......but hope you find the one your looking for.
The Herbert kills the KR7 in my opinion. ;)

The vh4 was a weird thing i loved it when i was tuned standard or e flat or even d sounded good, But when tuning lower, Drop B drop A were i play i didnt like where the amp was in the midrange. The feel was different, It was tite but didnt have a bit of bang or sag in the bottom i was looking for. Lead, clean was great but chugging heavy riffing wasnt good for me. Also when in the mix with everyone and another guitar player it wasnt as powerful as i would have liked. It was a bit lack luster to be honest. We did a few albums and ended up just using the vh4 for leads and clean stuff, Very few overdubs it just wasnt working so i dumped it. I thought it was me I sold it to someone and ended up getting into a fight with the guy lol He said it sounded like shit lol anyway, I was hoping for something like this is this an accurate representation of the herbert?

The Herbert can EASILY handle what your talking about.
Has a Mid cut switch on it that gives you variety of tone.
The KR7 has a Mid cut on it as well. I think it just has a more GROWLY gain voice compared to the Herbert.
Both amps kick ass........I just preffer the Herbert since it can get me all the tones I been looking for with no sweat.
180 watts of pure magic.

Weird. Seems to me that something wasn't quite right with the VH4 you owned, especially if the 2nd cat started to BMW about it (Bitch, Moan & Whine). Sounds to me as though it needed a serious overhaul - new tubes everywhere, re-bias, and get back on 'er. The V and the Herbert have he ability to blow windows out with their punch, low end and sizzle. So this is an odd contemplation. There's a signature sound to the Herbert that does stem from the VH4 as well, it's the Diezel trademark. Making sure that this 'trademark' tone is in fact NOT the one thing you hated about the V would make me feel better about you checking out the Herbert. Know what I mean?? If indeed that trademark grunt 'n sizzle was what turned you off, then ya might as well go for the Rivera, or at least demo these amps if you can to get a sense of what's happening.

What was the V loaded with if you don't mind me asking? I know that amp changes immensely once the MV goes to 1 o'clock - the whole thing just starts to go nuclear up in that region of volume... I've been scared of my VH4S after the 1 o'clock mark - it's devastating and it has ripped jam sessions and studio sessions' a new a-hole compared to the Soldano's, Marsha's, Peavey's, VHT's and Mesa's going at the same time.

This is a head scratcher for me - keep us posted as to what you do

V.

When I had my VH4....we did some Drop C and it sounded crushing.
Not as mean as the Herbert....but not weird in any sense.
I think you wont go wrong in either case with the KR7 or herbert.
I would hold off for the Herbert though. ;)

I had the KR7 and the Herbert at the same time. I still have the Herbert. I liked that KR7, but found it a bit difficult to dial in...the shared EQ made it hard for me to get the 2nd channel bright enough without making the 3rd channel ice-picky. Dialed separately, there were great tones in each though.

The Rivera is more open sounding than the Diezel and also has a more raw tone on the 3rd channel. I do think they are different enough to have both, but I'd personally take the Diezel over the Rivera. Based on what you play, you may very well get along with the KR7 since it was specifically designed to work well with low tunings and you might also not give a shit about the 2nd channel. Also, I think you can find them on the super cheap. I couldn't give my KR7 away when I had it, and it was not a bad amp at all!!!

That's a pretty bad representation of what the KR7 really sounds like. It is the worst low-volume amp I've ever heard, period.
However, once you get the Masters above 3 or so, it's a monster.
You've really got to hear it in the room (or on a good recording) to make an honest judgment...it's just an amp that doesn't work well in YouTube clips.

Out of the amps you currently own, I'd say that the KR7 is probably the closest to the CL100.
I own an UltraLead, and it's pretty similar to that, but with more saturation and a looser low end...which is pretty close to what I've heard about the CL.

MY vh4 was a 2006/2007 It came with 6l6's, I went to el34's sounded better. Tried ruby, sed wing c, settled on tung sol. The el 34s gave the amp alittle more bite i felt which i liked.

This is the kr7 video i ment to link lol sorry im at work. I liked the gutteral sound of some of the takes with the gt100 and v30's. Is it just me or the sound of channel three on the kr7 is close to the diezel herbert just not as hi fi?
Im gased for both.

Great amp.

I hate comments like that.

Why, you don't like bass?

I love bass and I love dropped tuning as well, and if I wasn't such a puss, I'd be listening to that little voice in my head and throwing some "Not Even Slinkys" on my Suhr, after I filed out the nut of course....but an even louder voice is screaming in my ear "DON"T FUCK WITH IT!!!"

That first clip of the Herbert you posted is boosted. Keep that in mind. His other clip of his VH4 sounds very similar (just with less gain, but it sounds like he had the gain turned down). So, also keep that in mind. ;)

The other two clips just sound awful. I don't know why you'd want that tone.

My VH4 handles dropped tunings just fine. My Jackson with EMG 85/81 is tuned to Drop D down a step and a half and it sounds like lucifer cuming all over a unicorn's face through my VH4. I'd try and actually find these amps to play before you buy one.
