Diezel kicked the bucket last night. Need backup amp...

So we're rocking out last night and my Herbert goes dead silent. It's weird because the last two practices I noticed a slight unusual hum out of the amp. I switched outlets, put it on a power conditioner, plugged in direct, but the hum remained. I figured whatever, let's just play. Well eventually it just cut out. Still lit up, channels still switch, all tubes lit up, just no output at all. Tried changing speaker cable, even tried plugging direct to the fx loops to see if I could at least see if the power section was working. Nothing.

So, over the last year I sold off a shitload of amps. Two Mesa Dual's, one Mesa Single. Bogner Uberschall, Peavey 5150 (block), Marshall Vintage Modern, VHT Pittbull Ultra Lead. And those are just the high gainers. Now I realize, I don't have any high gain amps left, and I had already been kicking myself for selling so many off So, I want to snag something, but with money being tight I need to stick to $1000 or less. Maybe a tad more, depending. You guys want to help me shop? Offer me some suggestions, please!

I'm eying the 5150. Cheap, and gets the job done. I do miss my block letter. Not the most versatile though and the clean channel was never the greatest. So, what else should I look for? Mesa Tremoverb? 5150 III? I like the modern high gain stuff, but the amp has to have a good clean channel.

In the meantime I'll get my Dad to look at the Diezel. Hopefully it's something minor.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

Most likely just a power tube issue. You'll be able to get tubes quickly from http://thetubestore.com/ if you are in a hurry. If not, then from http://valvequeen.com/

How about the Peavey 6505? Even new, that is in your price range. In your area for new, that would be either Jett or Music City.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike! I'm hoping that's the case. I didn't have time to test that out last night but I have enough spare tubes to test it out.

Yeah I'd consider the 6505. I wonder how the plus model is. Played one years ago, don't remember much about it. I'll probably pop by Jett's today.

My buddy has an Egnater Renegade I'm going to check out Friday.

Dude, if you haven't tried a Roadster, I seriously suggest you try to pick one up. I've gone through modded Marshalls, Marshalls, Mesa Mark III, Electradyne, Mark V and just lately a Hagen here and it has literally kicked the shit out every one of them. Once you get them dialed in they are SUPERB. Killer cleans, awesome mid-gain on ch 2, huge Dual Rec high gain tones on ch 3 and a killer lead on channel 4(albeit with unorthodox settings). I've seen them as low as 1250 which to me is an insane price on a amp that does so many things so well!

I have a Hughes & Kettner Trilogy listed right now for right in that price point. PM if interested.

The Egnater Vengeance is right there in that price group brand new. Very nice clean and I liked the dirty channels. Pretty versatile amp.

I have the 6505+. I dig it. It's not as thick as the 5150 combo but it sounds great to me.

I bet Mike is right. Power tube went and took the B+ fuse.

Phrygian, the Renegade won't have enough gain and low end for you, specially if you're used to a Herbert. It's a FANTASTIC rock/blues amp but not a metal machine.

I'd recommend you get into a guitar Center and check out the Egnater Vengeance and Armageddon, those will definitely be in your alley.

You sure you didn't just activate the mid cut feature ? :D

Sounds exactly like a blown fuse and/or the power tubes. Same thing happened to my JSX a few months back. And you could always look at GC Used online. They have all the greats and you can always find something under 1g. I saw a JSX on there last week for $399... I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not picking it up as a back up.

My guess? Power tubes need replacing and re-biasing once installed. New slo-blow fuses in all spots. If this isn't the case, it's potentially OTs which would be bad - real bad. Typically PTs go with a bang - pop, sizzle, crackle - this bit about there being a hum in advance of its death, not so sure. Don't like the sounds of this. When you're done going tilt on th gigging, plug this baby back in and hit the standby to RUN - make sure there's a load on it - and look behind to see if the fuses are shot. Even in advance of hitting RUN, when the amp is in standby mode, with the rear grille off the back, you should notice the tubes will either be heating and coloured homogenously, or there'll be a couple or four or maybe all six that look weird inside - red, orange, blackened interior of the tube, etc.

Peace,
Mo

If you or your dad needs help to fix the (probably tube related) Herbert issue, let me know . . .

My herbert blew a fuse a few months ago and a set of my tubes went bad, i changed the fuse and changed a few tubes and it worked fine until last week and the same thing happened. So i decided to order new power tubes from laura. I think my old tubes went bad.

I would love to find a Roadster at $1250, Tyler! If you come across one please send it my way lol.

Great amp, just have enough Marshall's to wet my Marshall appetite. Still, at the prices they're going for now, it's a good amp to consider! Thanks.
