Dude, if you haven't tried a Roadster, I seriously suggest you try to pick one up. I've gone through modded Marshalls, Marshalls, Mesa Mark III, Electradyne, Mark V and just lately a Hagen here and it has literally kicked the shit out every one of them. Once you get them dialed in they are SUPERB. Killer cleans, awesome mid-gain on ch 2, huge Dual Rec high gain tones on ch 3 and a killer lead on channel 4(albeit with unorthodox settings). I've seen them as low as 1250 which to me is an insane price on a amp that does so many things so well!

I own a 5150 and currently use a 5150 II, and a roadster was the first amplifier to come to mind to recommend to you. Wont find one at $1,000, but for a bit more on the used market you could.

if you hated the cleans of a 5150, consider a used 5150 II. seperate EQ and a seperate tube stage dedicated to the cleans which allows you to use tube selection plus the better design to achieve a better balanced amplifier all around.

Cool that it is working now.

But, the theory of buying a cheaper tube amp isn't going to fix tube related problems....comes with the territory.

No, I know, and that wasn't really the point of it. Just realizing that I sold off all my other high gain amps and that I'd be in a bit of a pickle should it happen again. Nice to have another high gainer on standby. Just makes me realize I miss having a bunch of amps lol. It'll be worth grabbing something to fall back on in the future.

I'm going to keep the Roadster on my radar. But for now, it's winter tires. lol

I hate it when that happens, i was eyeballing two Engl Pro cabinets for a christmas present to myself and my school laptop decides to shit the can, so much for that!

4 Channels make the roadster way more versatile than even a 5150, and with the high gain taste you have i highly suggest grabbing one, it would match great and they make amazing studio amplifiers under a mic as well

Engl Screamer 50 is a great backup. You can get them used for $800-900. Will def do the brutalz, and has good cleans, too.

Try swapping the preamp tubes. Might have burnt one.

I'll definitely do that. Thanks.

Matt

i had a similar deal with my Splawn.....started acting funny a few weeks, and then died. just dead silent. i had new power tubes and preamp tubes on the way already when it died, when i opened it up i had a smoked preamp tube. whole tube was just totally whitish grey inside. new tubes, biased it up and it's happy as it ever was

good luck bro!

It's probably the B+ fuse, or a preamp tube. The tubes can still light up with a bad B+ fuse....

So we're rocking out last night and my Herbert goes dead silent.

You sure you didn't just activate the mid cut feature ? :D

The new 5150III mini should be a great high gain back-up/small gig amp.............if its ever released. It's right in that price range.

i should mention the mid cut bit is HILARIOUS, cracks me up every time :hys:

something to try. I noticed my Herbert would make no sound, even plugged into the fx loop, if there wasn't something plugged into the input jack in front.

My Herbert did that when i first got it, and it turned out to be the V1 tube. For some reason, my Herbie ate V1 preamp tubes like candy.

Hey did you ever get the Herbie fixed? This is a very depressing story and I feel really bad. Is there no warranty?

Honestly, Id rather spend a few hund to get that one fixed. But my suggestion, tough call in that price range. Naturally id say get an Orange Rockerverb (best cleans) and kills for the heavy, but thats way over 1,000 even used unless you find a steal.

So Peavey 6345 or whatever the new one is, VHT amps, Engl FB?

Honestly none of these are going to have great cleans. Get the Orange!! lol

Or please for me just get the Herbie fixed. I love him so much.

Must be something in the air at the moment - my Herbie is on its way to Papa back in Germany to be fixed :(

Mesa Dual Rackto.
get em for about 11 1200 these days, Throw some new tubes in them and your set. ITs great sounds insane, Its tight, It has something special to them. If you have a couple extra bux send it to jerry at fja Unreal He turned it into something words cant describe. Im in the process of recording an album. At this point i have 15 high gainers and cabs. It came out top 3 and everyone from producer to engineer to the whole band agreed hands down. It has that it Factor.. Its a little limited channel wise how ever there is lots of work arounds. Volume knob, Volume boots in the loop for solos etc....
