I've gone through modded Marshalls, Marshalls, Mesa Mark III, Electradyne, Mark V and just lately a Hagen here and it has literally kicked the shit out every one of them. Once you get them dialed in they are SUPERB. Killer cleans, awesome mid-gain on ch 2, huge Dual Rec high gain tones on ch 3 and a killer lead on channel 4(albeit with unorthodox settings). I've seen them as low as 1250 which to me is an insane price on a amp that does so many things so well!
I own a 5150 and currently use a 5150 II, and a roadster was the first amplifier to come to mind to recommend to you. Wont find one at $1,000, but for a bit more on the used market you could.
if you hated the cleans of a 5150, consider a used 5150 II. seperate EQ and a seperate tube stage dedicated to the cleans which allows you to use tube selection plus the better design to achieve a better balanced amplifier all around.
