Currently looking on purchasing a VH4. The only cab I have is a Mesa Recto 2x12 with V30s. Anyone else have experience with this pairing?

Yep. Works fine. But depends on the sound you're after.

I am working on starting a cover band. We play RHCP, Van Halen, Kiss, Stone Temple Pilots, Led Zep, and maybe Metallica (if I can convince them). I really love the VH tone and after watching the youtube video of the guy covering Judgement Day by Van Halen I was sold.

IMHO the recto cabs are quite upper-mid heavy, but if you like that...

I'm using that set up. I play similar stuff, and I think it sounds great.

Based on the sounds you're after, I'd rather use Greenbacks than V30's. If it's a 2x12 you're after, also check out Orange and Bogner.

Thanks for the responses guys. After buying the VH4, I won't have too much cash left over for other gear, so I am just looking for a cheaper alternative.

I use my VH4 with the mesa 4x12. The combo sounds great! Im sure the 2x12 will do just fine!

I am considering a Diezel cab now. The Mesa is just so "boomy" to me.

Does anyone else have suggestions on an alternative to a Diezel cab?

I have a chance at a Diezel 4x12 rear loaded with Eminence speakers. Any thoughts on these and how they fit with the music I play (see post 3)?

I don't really play heavy, detuned music ala Slipknot, etc. (althought I do enjoy listening to that type of music).

I'm running an Einstein with a Mesa V30 loaded Traditional straight front cab and it sounds killer. In my opinion the Recto cabs sound too boomy.

That's what I think too. It is almost as if there is too much bass. I really have to turn down the bass and deep knobs.

The rear loaded Diezel 4x12 is interesting but the cab is pretty beat up.

I have also been looking VHT Fatbottom 2x12s and possibly a Bogner 2x12.

I might have to try and find a traditional sized Mesa 2x12.

As far as I know all of the Mesa 2x12 are the same with the exception of the vertical cabs and the 3/4 closedback cabs. I think that GC has a used Diezel 4x12 used at one of their locations for $499. Not sure which store but check it out.

I have been emailing back and forth with the manager of that GC. It is a rear loaded 4x12 w/ Eminence speakers. The are lots of scratches in the tolex and one hole in the speaker grille, so I can see why it is priced at $499. I would buy it, but it would be a pain to haul around since I only have a sedan.

Fair enough. Don't settle for a 2x12 if can help it. I know money is an issue. I'm contemplating a VH4 over my used Einstein. A 4x12 will make you much happier.

Best wishes.
