Diezel VH4S vs Diezel Herbert? Which one is best?

On my 'gear should have kept' post there's a lot of talk about Diezel VH4S and Herbert amps. What are the differences between these amps? What's the best one for getting vintage tones + modern when needed? Do these now rank as the best amps available? Any downside to their design? What other amps would you compare them to?
 
I really Gelled with the VH4S .....and I am mostly a metal head.
Liked the Herbert....but LOVED the VH4S.
 
You'll get a million votes for each amp. They are both awesome (but VH4 is KING!) Do a search in the Diezel subforum and you'll find a lot of good info on both:)

The only tidbit you may find helpful is that the "S" on the VH4S is for "Stereo". It's basically the VH4 with 2 x 50W power sections offering two independent outs. If you want to compare dollars to donuts directly, go for the VH4 (mono) and the Herbert toe-to-toe. Your ears will have to dictate what you choose. They're both the reigning King of Diezelness.

I have a chance to pick up a Herbert MK I locally for 2400.00 cash. Steve39Stripes says they're more of a 'metal' amp, so I don't know? The metal I know and love was played for the most part on Marshall amps. Maybe a Diezel Herbert isn't for me then? Something tells that I should quit f#cking around, and just buy it. But then what if I can't sell it? Then the CCV-100 will come out, then I'll be pissed I didn't get that... F#CK!
 
If you can get that Herbert for $2400 thats a great deal. If you dont like it.....you can always sell it for what you got into it.
Only way you will ever know. Cant go wrong with either Diezel. :thumbsup:
 
I prefer the herbert but both will do what you want hands down :yes: :thumbsup:
 
I'd get the Herbert for $2400 (or less) and if it's not your cup of tea, flip 'er for the same price and get out and buy a VH4.

They're similar DNA, but different beasts.

Jazz to death metal with ease. It can get a bit meaner sounding than the vh4 if needed or it can be straight up rocking.
 
Either will suit your needs for any genre. The Herbert will give you a bit more "oomph" for modern metal; the VH4 is tighter. Both fantastic amps. I prefer the Herbert but really regret selling the VH4.

Do a search on the forum - the diezel debate has been around for as long as the 6 string guitar.

Personally i find the VH4 better than the Herbert simply because it's voicing is well suited for live use and in the studio. The Herbert is more of a studio queen - i did not like what i heard from the herbert live/in a mix - a JCM800 1x12 combo ate it for lunch in a band mix. It was quite shocking. It is easy to voice it to where it sounds great in a bedroom but sounds like ass in a band setting or does not sound like anything at all simply because it does its famous disappearing act :lol: :LOL:

I only have played a VH4 and only briefly and only heard a Herbert. Between the two i would get a VH4, but overall i disliked both and prefer bogner's. It really comes down to personal taste and preferences.
 
You mentioned Vintage and Modern tones with a Marshall style sound right? You also mentioned interest in the CCV-100.
As much as I love the Diezel amps I am not sure if that is the best amp for your needs.

Do you need midi? FX loop options? how many channels?

What style of tone do you really want and at what volume. Both the Herbert 150 watt and the VH4 120 watt is really loud.
 
My vote is for the VH4. Very versatile amp. Best one Ive ever played.

Whilst the Herbert doesn't cut like a VH4 in the mix, if you reduce the mid-cut and up the mids it cuts just fine.

MIDI - not really, but it would be nice to have. FX loops - yes. 2 channels are fine, but 3 would be better.

My first tube amp was a 100 watt Marshall Super Lead, so I've been sort-of raised on 'that' sound. So far, the best amps I've owned were Soldano SLO, Bogner 100B, and Cornford MK. Soldano requires huge volume to push the 6L6 tubes, so that's out. The Cornford MK and Bogner 100B sounded nearly identical, so I sold the 100B. I've regretted selling the MK, so I'm hoping that the Herbert can do the Bogner/Cornford tones + have the modern Diezel tones that I'm missing. Can EL34 tubes be designated to a specific channel on the Herbert, or do they all blend together?
