Which do you prefer? And let's keep this to the effects loop since any delay with high gain using the input of the amp is a trainwreck.

I've had good results with the Boss DD20, DD2, Nova, and rack units like the Intelliverb and Replifex. The Line 6 DL4 didn't work for me in the loop
I tried the Carbon Copy and wasn't crazy about it. Not enough control and i thought it was too dark sounding. I liked a Boss DD-2 better.

Seems like all the guys who swear by Analog delay are those who run a clean amp with mid gain at most. Any Analog delays out there that work great in a serial effects loop? I've read some good things about Cmatmods.

Im all about Digital delays for the loop or for slaving purposes, as i find analog delay just too dark and muffled in a loop :) That said.. im using pretty high gain tones (modded Marshalls), so chances are the analog delay would work nice infront of a Plexi or lower gain/mid gain amp

I'm all for digital now  Mainly because of the ability for programability and presets. I mainly use it in a parallel loop or doing w/d/w, right now I'm using a rack fx unit for my FX. Kind of cool not having to tap dance around :)

Digital. Every analog delay I've ever tried has sounded muddy and just shitty in general.

Analog fan here. They have more personality IMO. Digital always sounds a bit too perfect to me, but it definitely has its place though.

I switched to the Retro Sonic Delay and have been very happy with it.
I need to man up and try it through the loop. Doesnt sound bad up front.

digital fan here too. More control and just sounds cleaner.

For high gain digital all the way, mid gain up to VH type gain analog does sound good. Inever bought into the carbon copy.

YOu sure you had the DL-4 set right? Just got back from my jam band stuff and it sounded pretty darn good. Didn't you have some Lexicon box you were happy with?

I can't stand analog delay for anything. Hate that lo fi rolled off crap.

I have to say the TimeFactor (Digital) is my favorite delay thus far with high gain.

Analog just smears the delays too much for me with any amount of gain. I found one of those old Ibanez AD-80 or whatever it's called (the analog delay that was in the same family as the TS808) and it was cool for cleans, but much gain at all and even in a pedal level loop it was smeared as hell. Now, if you were playing half notes or something it might be cool, but otherwise it just smeared all over the place.

Give me a decent digital or a digital emulation where you can adjust the amount of wow/flutter or high end loss any day.

Pete

I like analog. Digital is cool for leads, but I don't like it for any rhythms. This is why I love the Rocktron Xpression. Cuz you can choose between both for every preset. Best of both worlds, were TC stuff you are stuck with that digital sound.

The Wampler Analog delay sounds pretty cool

Never gave it much thought. I run my DD3 right in front on my VH4 channel 3 and Uber channel 2, both with loads of gain and is awesome. I can't be bothered with FX loops.

There's a thread on TGP about the Wampler. It is in fact NOT an analog delay pedal, it's digital. Does the Rocktron just emulate analog? I'm guessing yes. I don't mind the digital emulation of analog.

In general i agree with everyone here. Funny how you get the opposite reaction on TGP.

Put it in in the loop and raise the level of the pedal, it will sound a lot clearer/cleaner.

I far prefer analog or digitally emulated analog as the high frequency rolloff of the repeats add more dimension to the "space", the sound emulates a sound that is getting farther and farther away from you.

Digital has its place also, but when it comes down to it we guitarists are on the fence 50/50. some want printine repeats, some like chewy, grungy, spaciousness. Neither is inherently better than the other.

Far too subjective, its probably true that you'd be best off with one of each!
