In general i agree with everyone here. Funny how you get the opposite reaction on TGP.

TGP takes a lot of stuff to a new level. My favorite recently was the 'guitar strap affecting tone' thread. :)

I can't stand analog delay for anything. Hate that lo fi rolled off crap.

I had to laugh, because that is how I feel too. I don't want a delay to change my core amp tone-- I spent too much time making the amp selections, to use something that will alter them.

My favorite sounding delays: (I know... I'm a lunatic)

TC2290
Eventide H8000FW
Lexicon PCM 80

That said, some other delays that I think sound very nice are:

H&K Replex (Big pedal)
Pigtronix Echolution (pedal)

Side note:

The Rocktron Intellifex I have (original BF)-- sounds nice too. I have a Boss DD2 that is ok.

Digital is my preference

It depends on what I'm going for. For high gain soloing or "hi-fi" clean sounds, digital all the way. If I'm using it to simply fatten up a rhythm tone or add a slapback effect (think Brian Setzer), then analog is the way to go.

Timefactor here. Sounds good enough that I don't even think of upgrading and I'm not easy to please. Vintage & tape delay are very good & transparent sounding. DD is not the worst either.

I have yet to hear a "transparent sounding" tape delay. I guess my 2290 is considered vintage now, as they came out in '86 (Was it '02 that they were discontinued?-- I digress) and I would agree that it is as transparent sounding as it gets.

I have an analogue pedal in the loop of my "lead" Marshall (permanently on, using another amp for crunch and clean). I do like its warmth over my digital delays.
Why not get both - a cheapish Artec analogue and a Digitech to decide which you prefer and then buy something "better" . . .

I wouln't use tape delay for anything other than cleans or alike and for that it's transparent. For the rest vintage delay all the way ..... for me.

Echoplex EP-4. an EP-4 has EQ controls which you can adjust BASS/Treble frequencies unlike a Replex or EP-3. My opinion totally, but i don't like the sound of running most digital effects through a loop, especially a marshall because for me its sounds a bit cold. But I have heard the intellifex and roland SD-1000, Old Lexicon series delays sound pretty good. I've only messed with a MXR carbon Copy which i though sounded dull and had some signal loss . Real Tape echo's
have more head room than the analog pedal delays and you can push them hard without getting digital farting.

good luck!

I just realized this is related to a HIGH gain amp. I've never owned a high gain amp before, just stock amps ,so u can disregard my post ; )

not even close..analog..and the older and crustier the better,.. i have a multivox mxd-5 that i consider the heart of my sound...

For me with high gain Digital is the winner. I just to hear what others might say. I bought a Carbon Copy and returned it the next day.

I've had a few analog delays and none of them ever sounded good to me for high gain leads. They don't seem to sound right to me.

I'm totally in love with the digi emulated roland space echo that is out.

I'm working both digital and analog into my rig when i can!

Well, I really like the tape delay emulation on the G-system, using that for now, but like the others it has too. I didn't like anything but the digital delays on my podxt live I was using in the loop. For recording some of the emulations on it were ok, but in the loop it wasn't happening, IMO. Like Zach said I've chosen my signal path carefully and would rather not use an effect than use if its affecting the tone too much. So far the G system seems very transparent though, I think it could be a keeper. If not, that's what the 30 day return policy is for

forget everything else and check out the new digitech hardwire delay........warm, organic really awesome delay, using it in my loop of my heads
