I have a strat that had the Fender fat 50's single coils and I swapped out the neck with an Area 61. Thumbs up DiMarzio! 
I have a Mesa Mark III so a regular single coil sounds like a waterfall of noise but the Area is DEAD silent. It's got a bit more output than the Fat 50's and it's brighter, but it sounds great to me, like a really good single coil. I'm sold on the Area Pickups. 
Now to get a humbucker for my bridge postion. The Fender Diamondback is horrible.
