so I've always loved the HS-3 for how clean and articulate it is - but could never get the body of tone that I like from it. I was always using it with SD-1's or Tubescreamers. So I'm watching an old Gary Moore video and he says he always used an DS-1 with single coils - I had never been a fan of the DS-1, but I have one. Grabbed my strat with HS-3 in the bridge to DS-1 to my Ceriatone 1987 - walaaa!!! Was almost perfect! Still a bit bright for me, but VERY close. Put a .047 cap across the clipping diodes of the DS-1 and kablamoo - there it is. I might have a new favorite formula for tone! I like my tones darker than most so most of you guys might dig it with a stock DS-1. Anyway thought I'd share as another option for all the tone seekers out there!

The DS-1 was always my go-to pedal since it came out in '78 or so. I may get an Analogman version just to have one in the arsenal.

Nice Darren. I haven't used a DS-1 for a very long time. I was thinking of getting one though as I scored a 73 Superbass a while back and I know Gary used a Super for a lot of those early recordings and live shows that we all dig so much. Thanks for the insight.

What was the video ? I don't think I've seen that.

Thanks.

Here you go! Man I'm digging the DS-1 with lower output pu's (cool rails, HS-3, etc...) more than something like a Hot Rails or SD into the SD-1...

What are your settings on the ds1?

that's where it gets a bit interesting... keep in mind my amp is broken up a little bit aready (Jcm800/plexi type of gain). I like a heavy mid tone - by keeping the level down you get more mids - turn it up and you get more highs and lows. I keep the level at about 1/4 they way on, keep the tone about 1/4 the way one and put the gain all the way up.

DS-1 and HS-3 in the right hands are great, as you show. Sounds killer!

Funny thing most hate both.:)

For me the trick with HS-3's are using them with no tone control attached, like Yngwie did back in the days, makes them a tad hotter and breathes some life back to them. Will never do John Mayer tones, but with gain they are just awesome.

I have an old DS-1 and into the right base tone it's super. Fat and "chewey". I run the volum all the way up, it's barly at unity that way, Tone at like 10 o'clock, gain almost maxed.

Funny thing I recorded GM's Empty Rooms solo just 12 days ago using the DS-1.
Single coils. not HS-3's thouggh, Wilde MicroCoils.

Here's the DS-1 into a 5150. Wilde L500L bucker.

sounds great man! but is that Empty Rooms? I recognize the solo you did but this is what I think of for Empty Rooms...

You missed the empty rooms link. It's just a link to Tonefinder, not a video :)

ahhh there it is! Love that solo man sounds great. I'm interested in those pickups, will be checking them out! I actually am really digging the DS-1 with a Cool Rails in the bridge as well.
