Dimarzio Illuminator

My favorite Petrucci tone is on Suspended Animation. I liked the tone on Train of Thought, but Dream Theater stuff since then has been pretty normal and doesnt do as much for me. I like him as a guitar player, but never been terribly interested in any of his sig gear.

Well, after getting through 1:30 of Petrucci's boring as speed playing and kirk hammetish wah doodling, I thought nothing new, his sound would sound over processed with any pickups! I think that guitar is ugly too :) I'm a dimarzio fan though, i dig em! 36 anni and super distortion.

They seem pretty interesting, would like to try them out. I will say that I really do like the original dimarzios that came in the early years of his guitars.

I have a JP6 with the D-sonic and Custom. I also had a Sterling MM JP50 which I put Liquid Fire and Crunch Lab in. The difference? Not much. The tones of these pickups are nice, but they're nothing get excited about.
Petrucci will put out a new product, and he'll promote it, that's cool because he needs to make a living. But I'm willing to bet there's not much difference with these new Iluminators either.
Bottom line: listen to the demo, is the the tone really good? Not to my ears, sorry. As for the new JP13? it starting to look more and more like an Ibanez.

+1 , he's a great guitar player but on the vid tone sounds super compressed and it's uninspired noodling , motorway fretboarding

That was not a full review so i cant tell anything about the pickups. No cleans no switch in between, lots of effects :P Anyway crunchlab and liquifire look cooler :P

As they didn't have enough choices to date, Dimarzio needs to offer another humbucker????

:loco:

It's more the fact that the D Sonic became the Crunch Lab, which then evolved in the Illuminator
All those pickups are pretty similar
The Liquifire was a nice addition as a nice addition to the neck pickup lineup, the Illuminator neck is a bit different.
But all in all, it's just another signature pickup to please a signature artist and sell to the fanboys
At least Vai and Satch got their new signature to be different than their older ones

Pretty smooth sounding. I'd be interested in hearing it in a less affected context. Sounds good here, though.
