comparing EVH, Dime and Yngwie... who's next?

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.
Yes. This thread is turning into Crazytalk USA.

All are/were great and inspirational players who deserve a spot in the Hall of Fame.

He was the best man. Not only the lead playing, but the riffs and hooks he wrote will be around a long time. Total package.

Total Package needs to include tone. While Dime's tone worked for the material, it was not exactly the tone of the gods.

Yngwie EVH and Dime are not very comparable due to their material....but I'll compare anyway, lol. I guess EVH has the total package but lacks production in the last few decades (1 disc which I love). Ynqwie has the chops yet somehow sucks, and Dime has the riffage but misses on tone. Also -1 on no one really liking anything he did after Pantera.

Dime had the most evil tone ever! His live tone on the 101 live album is unreal! By far the best tone of any guitarist ever!

Dime as awesome. His tone wasn't for me though. For my money, I'd take Mike Chlasciak and both Tim Calvert and Craig Locicero over Dime for both riffs and leads. Jmo

In your life, you will meet some people that have something really special in them. Call it as you want, some people say gift of god. Personality traits that are bigger than life, Dime style was so unique.

And Rhoads, and Blackmore... YJM took it to another level, though. :)

Edit: Just my opinion, but metal wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Dime.

you could look at it as metal would be better now if pantera hadn't happened. So many bands came after them that copied Phils "vocal" style that then spawned into all those god awful sub genres that exist today :D

I'll agree with that... Metal wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Dime *and* metal would be better today if it wasn't for Phil. :D

Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Dime, in the 90’s.

That opening riff of ‘I’m broken ‘
Caught me off guard. Was over seas. Came back home on leave
My buddy was like ‘check this shit out!’

Then he played ‘I’m broken’ at concert level volume thru his home stereo. Blew me away

I dont like commenting bad on Phil. He seems like a good dude when hes sober and an asshole when hes not but so are a lot of people. That's the most I can say.

With that said he was a HUGE part of Pantera. IMO for a band to really be amazing the entire line up should be great. They all did their thing, even though the riffs and drums were amazing, without Phil they may had not went as far. In his prime he was one of the best vocalists for metal. Even still today although his voice is entirely different, for the death metal thing hes doing with Scour is pretty damn good too.

Pantera was definitely more than the sum of their parts. I remember seeing them in St. Louis back in '91. There was nothing like them then, at least not that I was aware of. It was an amazing show!

Technically, they didn't go as far without Phil. From what I understand, their original singer wanted to continue in the more 80s metal style they'd been doing and they wanted to get heavier.

I wish they'd re-release Pantera's first three albums, but I understand why they haven't, at least to the best of my knowledge.

I always hear people bashing, and/or criticising Dime's tone!!!!! It was just perfect IMO, when CFH hit, it was the heaviest tone i ever heard. Witch metal guitarist had a better tone? What was wrong with Dime's tone? It crushed, big time.

It was cutting, raw, aggressive and BRUTALLLLL. Stop the nonsense.... Cowboys, Vulgar, Far Beyond Driven, they all had different tones, but they where all awesome????
