Heard this song on the radio the other day.
Wow. I normally dont listen to the lighter rock stuff but he had such a great clean tone and the solo ...........anyhow....just a great song that blew me away.
Like mentioned.....I mostly listen to the heavier stuff or older classic rock and this song sounded really good to me.

Anyone else here dig Dire straits and Mr. Mark Knopfler?
what was he using for that great tone on that album too?

UH-OH,,gonna need another amp for that one!!
Nah.....not my thing. ;)
I do envy him for that playing style.
Very clean and tasty licks!

I dig some Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler's the man  Weird fact about him is his b-day is the same day as mine :scared:

His tone is pretty specific.
When he plays.....you can tell its him.

Thats whats awesome!

Ironically I just started learning that one for a new band...there's a lot going on there, Knopfler's a monster player. His playing on the song Brothers in Arms is epic as well.
I saw him live at Red Rocks a few years ago (played a Strat and Paul through a pair of Komets)...absolutely incredible! The acoustics in that place are amazing...you could hear his fingers squeaking on the strings.

I was REALLY listening to the guitar parts of that song and your right.....way more then meets the EARS!

That solo is RIPPING! I still cant see how he pulled it off with no gain!

I just dug into this song over the weekend. Amazing playing and tone. I am not that good at it yet but getting there. I think he used an Overdriven AC30 and a tele. I have been getting close to his tone with that combo. The song is just filled with all sorts of tasty licks.

I read something that said he was using a Vibrolux and some kind of 60s strat.

Great song, I always get pissed when they play it on the radio and the dj starts talking over the solo

When I saw this on the TV back in '88, I went out the next week and bought my first guitar - a Tokai Strat that I still own

Funny thing is: today I don't even think the tone is very good there :)

Do me a favor man.... Listen to a song called News off the Communique disc. I am a Knopfler fanboy, and jam with some other like minded blues/Straits players. That one song seems to pull together almost all of the things that showcase his budding skills back in the old days. It is a haunting blues song. The backing guitar is probably harder than the lead. Lots of chics and fills.

I have been learning Once Upon a Time in the West and Tunnel of Love leads. Knopfler played a variety of amps. He even was an SLO man for a while. I think his technique, (tone in the fingers), comes thru whatever gear he plays. You can tell it's Knopfler on Money for Nothin or Down to the Waterline.

Check out Communique, - News, Once Upon a Time in the West, they will keep you busy for a while. It is also cool how many random people know the West tune. I can play that at a store to try out a blues rig and usually one or two people know it.

Just saw him a couple months ago. I had 9th row almost center seats.Makes about the 3rd time I have seen him, twice with my Father. Great TONE!!!! I was able to get pics of all the amp settings and his pedal board. The small 1x12 Tone King amp is hand built by a guy in Baltimore and is on my want list. His shop is only 15-20 minutes away from my house, I just dont want to stop in because I know I will be leaving with that amp

He plays with Chet Atkins on a cd called Neck to Neck that is awesome also.

My girlfriend at the the time begged me to get tickets during the Brothers in Arms tour which I reluctently did. It was one of the top guitar performances I have ever seen, he totaly threw me for a loop and gave me a lesson I will never forget

I´ve been a fan since I was a kid in the mid 80´s. Awesome player, and a very... unpredictable songwriter. But in a good way :D

As for the gear, I think it´s pretty cool that he used Boogies for much of the 80´s and the SLO for much of the 90´s. Not afraid of trying new stuff, it seems.

He's used some interesting, not super-desirable gear in the past.

Mesa Boogie SOB (Son of Boogie)
Nasty Ibanez Multi-fx units
Crate Vintage Club
Musicman heads
zoom multi fx
yamaha reverbs
galleon kreuger amps
delta lab pedals

Goes to show... TIITF

I love 'Sutlans of Swing', great song. I tried to learn it once for a band and got frustrated pretty quickly. It would take me a long time to get that down....
